I've seen many opinions on these cortisone shots and most are positive. It only seems like if the doctor doesn't know what he's doing, isn't qualified, or messes up, then that's where problems start.
For the most part, you will have mild pain from the needle but once the injection is done, I'm told it's almost immediate relief.

I go in for my first cortisone shot in my neck this coming Thursday as the neck pain is triggering a migraine almost every other day now and I am now on 3 different migraine medications to try to keep them to a minimum and it is no longer working. I have been told by another person I know that has had a cortisone shot that when she had a shot in her neck, they actually put her under in case there was a reaction to the shot. I'm almost hoping they put me under because honestly, I'm a sissy with pain.

I just had the Cortisone shots in my neck on Thursday, March 3,2011. From birth some of my spine is fused together, and in my neck my discs are narrowing thus crushing my nerves. I didn't have back pain or anything like that. I also have seizures which bring severe headaches themselves. I got an MRI done, they wanted to be sure there wasn't anything else bringing on the headaches, well there was, in my neck and spine. I received the shots and have been in so much pain ever since. My back aches so much that it is hard to get around. From reading many things on the internet (probably not a great source) this is not common. I can only associate the pain to the shots because as I stated above, I never had back pain before. I have to call my doctor on Monday as this is the weekend. If anyone else has had this problem as well, please let me know. ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed **

I will also post an update after I have spoken to my doctor. I have faith in him because he is so thorough, and very caring. Not a typical "Pain Management Doctor" Thanks for reading, and any experiences like this will make me feel that this isn't so bad, not that I want anyone else to have pain, but at the least would feel not so worried to find that this is common, or somewhat common.

Hello, I am currently 22 yrs old and when i was 19 I was in a back 5 car accident. I have disc replacement surgery in my neck and to be honest, i am in more pain now then before the surgery. I am still out of work!!! I did PT for 1 1/2 years, massage therapy and now chiropractic care and pain management. Chiro seems to help alot.. Yesterday was my first time at pain management and they gave me 2 injections in my neck because the pressure in my neck has not gone away since surgery and it causes bad migrains. They said that I have to much scar tissue from the surgery causing it. Well after the injections it seemed like the pressure and headache went away instantly, but later that night it started to come back so i went to bed early. Ever since i woke up this morning my neck and whole entire head is throbbing with pressure and pain and everything i took to try to help ease it has not worked!!!! My mother had these injections last year as well and they did not work for her either.

I had a cortisone injection in my shoulder last Thursday for bursitis.  That night I was fine but the next day I started to get flushed, cheeks and chest very red and my blood pressure went sky high 197/110.  I had to get a patch to wear overnight to lower the blood pressure.  I also had headaches and got the shakes.  It is now day 4 and am having to take blood pressure medication to control the high BP.  I take the medication at night and my blood pressure is fine in the morning, by the end of the day it has started to rise again.  I was taking Natrilix (diuretic) to control my very mild blood pressure problem and now find I have to take Ramipril (ACE inhibitor) to control it.  At night I am getting severe pains in my neck, possibly from the Ramipril.  The first doctor I saw had no idea that the cortisone injection could cause these side effects and contacted a doctor at the emergency dept of our local hospital to seek advice and was told it wasn't the cortisone.  After finding this website I found there have been many people with these side effects following cortisone injections.  I would carefully consider how bad the problem is before having another one of these injections.

Try a pain management specialist youll need a dr referral, I have been seeing mine for years and he give me cortisone injections in my neck head and shoulders along with many different treatments under sedation like facet blocks, bi lateral radio frequency (heating up and frying my nerve endings that are causing the pain) and I cannot speak highly enough of him. The only side effects I have had are post operative pain that is mild and minimal.

He isn't cheap and private health (in Australia) is needed for any operative procedures but he has been a god send and life saver for me as I suffer debilitating headaches stemming from nerve damage and muscle problems.

i HAVE DONE 2 INJECTION LAST YEAR. FIRST ONE - WAS NO PROBLEM. I FELT GOOD. BUT THE SECOND ONE - BROUGT ME ANOTHER, WORSE PAIN IN MY RIGTH SIDE OF MY HEAD (LIKE PREASSURE AND TINGLING) WHAT I HAVE NOT EXPIRIENCED BEFORE (SINCE I HAD A PAIN GOING TO SIDE OF MY NECK AND DOWN). FIRST DAY (DAYS) I FELT LIKE I'M CHOKING. I CALLED THE DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY - HE DIDN KNOW WHY IT I FEEL IT- HE SAID IF IT WILL GET WORSE - GO TO THE ER... LATER I WENT TO MY ORTHOPEDIC - HE SAID IT WILL GO AWAY - BUT IT DIDN'T. GOING TO P-THERAPY - WHERE I TOLD ABOUT THIS - WE STARTED SOME STRETCHES - IT HELPED FOR ONLY SOME AND ONLY SHORT WHILES RELIEV. I WONDER WHAT HAPPEND DURING INJECTION WHAT COUSED IT.
ALMOST NINE MONTH PAST - I STILL SUFFER - AS THE ADDITIOINAL PROBLEM - TO MY PREVIOUS PAIN AS A RESAON FOR MAKING THE INJECTION.

yes they have side effects and if you are a lucky one to get them as I was it is worse then the pain that you are having I have had bad pain in the back of my head since the neck injection throbbing pain that does not go away I would never have the injection again I hope you feel better and if you get it that it does not come with the side effects as I am suffering more after the cortisone steriod neck injection pain pills does not give me any relief and they say I may have this until the injection leaves my body which may take 4-5 months what hell I am going through

I think; that it is reasonable to ask for a scratch test of the steriod,
BEFORE having the inJection. i always mentioned that I have allergies
and to be on the safe side I would like to have a scratch test or get a clifford test

Please refer to Dr Nancy Epstein Neurosurgeon the list of side effects is catastrophic. My dear friends have had these injections &will never recover from aracnoiditis due to e.s.i. Go to Dr Oz show better yet ask your Dr and see if he tells you this is FDA approved. My Dr said it was when I contacted the FDA & told them what was said they sent me papers stating that it has never been approved & that the drugs are to never be used for epidural injections. Sorry, its what's in the literature & I'm tired of being lied to by Dr.s insurance companies or never told about these issues. The warnings that come from the Dr.s office came AFTER I SIGNED THE PAPERS. PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE INFO BEFORE making your decision.
