Had a cortisone injection in my kneee at noon today.  First one ever.  Went to bed at 11:00 pm and have been staring at the ceiling until now - 4:00 am.  Not sleepy and sort of wired.  Must be the shot.

I got my shot at 4pm yesterday...it is 5 am and I am wide awake. I got a headache about an hour ago...I think it is because I have not slept at all.

I had a steroid injection (i think a combo - the Doctor put 3 meds - or 2 mens and a numbing agent in the syringe) in the joint at the base of my thumb this morning at 10:30, to treat Trigger Thumb.   It is 4:15 and I am WIDE awake.   I appreciated reading the following:  "So why does it cause insomnia? If cortisone reduces inflammation, why would a side effect keep a person awake? The adrenal glands are responsible for regulating the fight or flight response in the body. As too much stress can keep the body awake by exhausting the adrenal glands, so too can an injection of cortisone. This side effect keeps the body awake and the mind stimulated.   Synthetic cortisone, when injected, begins to work immediately and can help the affected area for weeks, but the byproduct associated with insomnia typically only last 48 hours."

BINGO!    So, now I can chose a time-consuming project I love to avoid and get it done!  Finding the good in the bad.  And praying the steroid takes care of it, so I don't need surgery.  Amen!

I received the two shots shots (one brig cortisone) around 12:00 pm this afternoon. Even after lots of sugar, marijuana, and alcohol I am WIDE awake at 2:30am. I have to be up for work at 5:00am so this is very unusual for me. At this rate it looks like I won't be sleeping tonight. Surely this IS a side effect and despite my energy I wish I didn't have to deal with this.

Just a side effect y'all maybe last another 12 hours tops. Guessing with more injections it lasts longer, as long as there's relief I'm happy I will make the sleep up this week.

Hi,

I had a Cortisone injection in each of my shoulders (for Tendonitis) back in February 2015. It's the first time ever that I've had Cortisone. Shorty after that I started having trouble sleeping (falling asleep, staying asleep).  I've never had trouble sleeping until now.  This has been a continuing problem and has going on for weeks.  Is long-term sleeplessness a side effect of Cortisone?  Thanks in advance for any help/advice.
