Yes Effexor causes hair loss.  I've been taking it for 10 years now and my thick very long hair to my waist is no more.  It is extremely thin and scraggly and seems to have to stopped growing.  Effxor has ruined my life for the long 10 year's taking it.  Just about every bad side effect listed I have.  I've gone to doctor after doctor as instructed by my Primary Physician.  My tests and problems found.  I'm very sick, loss of coordination, vertigo, fainting, dyskinisia, kidney function is bad, GERD with extreme inflamation, hearing loss, blurred vision, abnormal sore healing, bad nose bleeds, nausea, vomiting dark fluid, etc.

I was just send to a Demotologist and he was the one who told I would need to see a Psychiatrist to help me get of the medications I'm on all caused from Effexor.

This is a drug that should have never been allowed to be used on humans.  I would strongly suggest you go to your doctor and ask to be changed to another medication.  The longer you take Effexor the worse you will feel and can get potententially life threatening diseases or side effects.

I'm getting off as soon as I can get an appointment with the Psychiatrist.

I wish you well....please think this over.

OMG! Me Too!!! You have described me! My hair was so long and thick. All my life I had beautiful hair. I have spent so much money, even after my insurance, trying to find out why hair has, and is still, falling out. I have been on Effexor XR for about 8 years. I have gained 55 pounds and no matter how hard I have fought to stop the weight gain. My doctor has assured me hair loss, high blood pressure, and weight are not caused by the medication. Obviously it IS!! I have been trying to wean myself off of it. Over the last 9 months I have been able to slowly step down from 300 to 150 a day. Next week I began another step down. I am so happy to have stumbled onto this form. I thought I was crazy or at least packed for the trip.

I have been on effexor xr for many years. Of recent, the dosage was increased from 150mg a day - 150 milligrams in the morning and 75mg at bedtime. I have noticed within the last year, a thinning of my once very thick hair. Could my thinning hair be a result of effecxor?

I too have noticed thinning hair, Ive been on Effexor for about 2.5 years now and noticed the hair loss about a year and a half ago. I am on a very low dose (75mg per day) but the hair loss seems to be slow and steady. Has anyone else experience this? Other comments seem to mention more sudden hair loss on Effexor. I need to get off of it. Thank you

I've been on this about 4 months and already my hair is thinning/shedding and very brittle! The sides and the top of my hair are the worse.Always had very thick natural hair.Had to see if others had hair loss to.Will be requesting a different medication. My dose is 37.5 mg and I'm in my mid 40's.

I would like to preface this by saying I am not recommending this for anyone, as my circumstances were unusual, and, this is not just about Effexor, but here goes... In mid-December 2015, I became very ill with a intestinal virus,(I assume as I did not go to the doctor). I was so ill for several days that I only drank liquids and went off ALL my meds...Effexor, Levothyroxine and Lisinopril. It is mid-March 2016 and I have not taken any of them. I feel no more or less suicidal than I did on the Effexor. I just had my TSH checked and it is normal. My Doc said he would do the full panel but did not. My blood pressure is in the 140's over 80's. I am 5'2" and weigh 200 lbs...of course I am going to have high blood pressure. My biggest problem, besides my weight and depression is that my hair is falling out. It has gotten finer and finer over the years and is baby fine now. I used to have thick, corse, curly hair...until I was put on medications. The only reason I went back to my doctor is because my insurance would have charged me $500 extra on my deductible if I had not. I did want to find out about my thyroid, but again, I was disappointed that I did not have extensive testing for it. I believe I was misdiagnosed serveral years ago as, according to this doc, I was never pre-menopausal. I believe my FSH was confused with my TSH. When I told him I had not had periods since he put me on the levithyroxine, he told me women my age typically don't have periods...I have been on most of these meds for at least 10 years. I think Western Medicine is a crock when it comes to most of us, and it has gotten worse over the last decade or two. I do wonder if anyone else has had the same meds in combination.

I am taking Effexor xl and when I take a shower I literally have a handful of hair in my hands then when I brush it another handful and after brushing it another hand full comes out on a rub through. I don't know how long I will have my hair at this rate!

Did you ever switch medications? I was looking for answers to the same questions you have. I have taken Effexor for 3-4 years. I have gained 50lb, sweat all the time, and have hair loss. My mood is better, but I am ashamed of my body. I want to switch, but I am worried about change.

I started antidepressants in June of 2013. I went through several different ones. I was on antidepressants for 3 years and my hair was falling out the entire time. I had stopped them for a few months and when I started them back up I noticed within about two months that my hair, which had started to thicken back up, was starting to thin and fall out again. I believe it is the effexor. That is what I was on. I had also tried welbutrin, abilify, zoloft, and lithium and these are just a few. Talk to your doctor about a different medication. I totally know how you feel. I don't want to be depressed and be bald either. Good luck. I am still searching for an alternative.
