I am a 40 year old woman and Ive been in a relationship with my boyfriend for 10 years. He is 64 years old. He has heart problems and diabetes. In the 10 years we've been together, he has never been able to get an erection from sexual stimulation. Once in a while during the night when he is sleeping, I am able to get him fairly hard, almost hard enough to have intercourse. I know he enjoys when I satisfy him and he is turned on by me....but I was wondering why isnt he able to get an erection while awake? I kind of think its because he puts too much pressure on himself, worrying about getting an erection. Viagara doesnt work either. It just seems strange medically, that even though it is capable of getting hard, it won't. I love my boyfriend and theres nothing more Id love to able to do than have intercourse with him. Please help

There are so many reasons why this may be happening including medication, physiological or psychological responses. Medications for the heart like beta-blockers -among others can cause blood to flow at a different pace or can block physical responses and adrenal responses. The initial rise of hormones when one becomes prepared for intercourse may be greatly affected or even lost b/c of the medication interaction. It may also block the viagra from working to its potential.

I would also assume that it could be due to psychological reasons, especially considering the waking/sleeping issue b/c we are cognitively aware as we are awake and our thought processes can affect us greatly at this time. For example, a happily married man that has always been able to get an erection losses his job and begins taking care of house work more as his wife goes from working part time to full time, but he no longer desires to have sex, nor could he if he wanted to. He feel like he has failed in some way and the neurons that were firing before are not firing in the same way anymore (testosterone is not responding as it used to) . Similarly to a man that feels pressured to get an erection because he wants to please his significant other (even if she is not directly putting pressure on him), first he can get an erection somewhat, than it becomes more difficult to, and finally, he can not at all. Eventually, it may seem like it is not even possible anymore.

Lastly is the fact that heart problems are involved. This can cause a good deal of stress on the mind (let alone the body) of an individual. He may fear (either consciously, subconsciously or both) that sex could cause him physical harm, damaging his heart or causing him to have a heart attack, even if this is in reality, unlikely.

If you could get him to talk to a doctor about his heart issues/medication issues/though processes that may be interfering, it may help if he is willing to ask. I wish you the best of luck.
