had surgery seven days ago is the worse pain I have ever had... I rather give birth to a million babies than ever go through this again.. I finally had my first B/M yesterday it was like being in labor for two days I had taken everything under the sun to not be clogged gummie fibers, activa, colace, two bottles of magnesium citrate (which I was told one bottle would do the trick NOT) well I made it through the BM now I'm feeling all clogged again finding it really hard to even sit on the toilet without screaming in pain. My Dr is not returning my calls and I went to the rest room and nothing but blood I don't know if I pop a stitch or what. and does anyone else have a awful smell almost like raw sewage coming from my bum...Please tell me what I can do I don't think I can handle much more....... I have been doing 5 to 6 sits baths a day still does not ease the pain hopeless

I hope it's better now, since it's been a few days since you posted. It helped me to spray with a shower nozzle after a BM, then a sitz bath to really get it clear. Miralax is a good laxitive that doesn't cause cramping and just makes it softer rather than turning it into diarrhea. My doctor recommends it 3 times a day, then reducing it so it's not diarrhea-like. You should aim for firm -- not real loose and definitely not hard. Ice packs on the butt after a painful BM helps too.
I read a post on here about guzzling a liter of water first thing in the morning. Drink it as fast as you possibly can without choking. If you drink it too slow, it will just get absorbed in your body. Drink it really fast and it flows through your system and helps flush out the poop. I don't know if that's scientifically true, but it seems to be helping me. And I can't imagine it could hurt things.
Good luck.

I had 3 external haemorrhoids removed 10days ago. The anaesthetist gave me a nerve spinal block to help with the pain post operation. I didn't quite appreciate how good an idea this was given it delayed me from leaving the hospital to feed my 4month old baby (who wasn't allowed to stay with me due to lack of hospital insurance). I worked the nerve block off pretty quickly and hobbled out like a thunderbird puppet. Got home and fed her fine.
The next morning - OH MY LIFE! I agree with many of the blogs - the pain was worse than labour for a couple of reasons - 1. the pain throbbed with every pulse in my body and didn't give me the minutes reprieve offered during labour between contractions, and 2. my post haemorrhoid pain went on and on for 5 days, and my labour 'only' went on for 3 days.
Breastfeeding meant I had restricted options to pain management but now, with a bit of time and an increased does of painkillers I can 'see the light'. Medication I initially took ibuprofen every four hours, staggered 2 hours later with cocodomol every 4 hours. This just didn't kill the pain sadly, but have upped my codeine dosage now which seems to be bit better. Laxatives you must take: for me this included movicol and lactulose to prevent constipation from the medication.
My advice on how to manage the first week post op is as follows:
- when the pain is so much, concentrate on getting through that 10mins, or hour, and dont think about how to get through the day.
- get full time family support for the first 7 days (without being dramatic i just couldn't have cared for my daughter without having my mother and mother in law stay with us, and my partner took some time of work to help too)
- hot baths. live in them. try getting out, if its too bad, get back in the bath, hot as you can tolerate helped me
- get familiar with your poos - sounds disgusting but I had to poo in the bath. I got a bit of a system going, the hot water relaxed the tight sphincter muscle, meant i could poo, after pooing i'd just gather myself mentally, scoop out the poo with a bowl, flush it, drain bath, clean bath quickly, refill it with hot water and recover.
- when it is difficult to fully empty the bladder - return to the bath again. wee in the bath, empty, clean bath quickly, refill the bath with hot water and recover.
- mind control offers a little help. it'll never be enough to mentally accept the pain etc. but i did a mental check on how i was and found i had often worked myself up into a weeping ball of tense anxious muscle which only tightened my anus and probably served to make it worse. Felt impossible to relax when I was so upset none the less, but the self check was enough to be mindful to try to relax when remotely possible.
- cry if you have to and if it helps. i measured my recovery by it. Day 8 i stopped crying. Still uncomfortable but at least im not crying.
Day 1 was the worst (score pain over the whole day 10/10)
Day 2,3&4 were similar (score pain over the whole day 9/10)
Day 5 similar but (score pain over the whole day 8/10)
Day 6, 7, 8, not sore all day, just pre-poo, post-poo for 2hours.
Day 9 I felt able to leave the house
Day 10 I left the house again today. OMG there is a world out there. Am able to think other thoughts that dont consist of 'please help me I'm dying'.
Different stories for different people. This is mine to date.
Best wishes all who need and have a Haemorrhoidectomy.

thank you very much for sharing - i'm on day 2 (28 hours after surgery ... is this day 1 or day 2), and while it helps reading all other posts, i find yours particularly helpful. Maybe it's b/c you echoed my thoughts perfect on the comparison with childbirth (i had two difficult vaginal deliveries... but those were laced with the elation that at the end of that i'll get a BABY out of that... this... nothing!). And your day to day what to expect list really helpful. thank you.
