It may be possible that you will do just fine with the Metformin dosage increase and that you will not suffer any ill effects from the change.  You have already been taking it for some time now and your body is already used to it.  I believe that if you increase the dosage, you will have no problem with any side effects, especially since you have been doing good at the dosage you were at.  If you do have side effects, they shouldn't last more than a few weeks.  You can take an anti-diarrheal for any loose stools.  For nausea, you can have meclizine that is available over-the-counter.

It sounds like you have been doing really well with your current metformin regime, but obviously your doctor has identified you need to take a higher dose. As you have got along so well up to now, you should find no difference with increasing your dose, but if you do start experiencing problems you can always go back to your doctor to discuss this with him. The extra dose of metformin means that your metformin can be spread out more evenly throughout the day, helping to keep your blood glucose levels more steady. As you are probably aware this is really important for your long term health. you may be happy to know that using metformin has lots of positive effects, it can prevent weight gain, and often aids weight loss, stabilises blood sugar very effectively and has positive effects on your cardiovascular system. Let us know how you get on and good luck with the new dose.
