I wondered if anyone could give me some advice? My doc recently upped my dose of metformin from 500mg twice a day, to 850mg twice a day. My HbA1c had crept up so that’s why he’s done it. The thing is, since he did that which was over 2 weeks ago I’ve started feeling a bit light headed and dizzy. I’m not sure if it is cos I’m taking a bigger dose or if it could be something else. Can anyone help me out? If it is the metformin, should I go back to my old tablets or what should I do?

Hi! Firstly you started you metformin on what is recognised as being the standard treatment for type 2 diabetes, so that’s what you should expect. If the 500mg bd isn’t controlling your blood sugars, which as you state it isn’t, then your GP would increase the amount that you need to take in order that you achieve a desired level of control. Moving your tablets up to 850mgs is a normal progression for dosing so it does seem a sensible move.
From what you say it does sound like you’ve possibly being getting some type of hypo just from your brief description, however he thing is that increasing the dose of metformin doesn’t normally cause hypos. If it does then generally it’s not just the metformin it’s because it’s either interacting with something else, or there’s something else going on. Certain drugs can cause problems with metformin, so if you’re taking aspirin or ibuprofen then you could possibly get a hypo. If you’ve had loads of beer the night before it could cause a problem. Either way you mustn’t change the dose of the metformin, but go back to the docs, check your other meds, and take his advice. Hope that helps!
