I am going to go in for a root canal treatment tomorrow and I already know that my dentist will hand me a prescription for penicillin to deal with the risk of infection afterwards. I was wondering whether I really need that prescription, and if there are any side effects with penicillin?

Good luck with that! Some people do get side effects from penicillin, like diarrhea, nausea, full moon face, and a stomach upset. After saying that, I will also say that I have had to take penicillin on a number of occasions and that I have never personally had any problems with side effects from penicillin.
