I started taking steroids for increased muscle mass and muscle endurance. The illegal short cut if you will. Whether you agree or disagree with that decision is besides the point. I can tell you from my personal experience of taking 5 different types of steroids, it depends on the steroid one is taking. Some steroids will increase your water retention or appetite causing you to look bloated, while others may have positive weight loss effects over short periods of time. There are different types of steroids for different types of patients and each chemical is uniquely designed to treat or serve purpose to each unique individual case. More often than not in my experience with this drug, I have gained a minimum of 15-25 pounds shortly after the first injection. whether it be from increased appetite or just from the water retention, weight gain is weight gain, and it looks bad either way you slice it. However, the negative weight gain effects of steroids should subside and go away within a few months after your last injection at the most. Any duration of time longer than 2-3 months after discontination of a steroid, should not negatively effect your weight because of the steroid itself from my personal experience. Other long term side effects are another story entirely. Maybe it is possible the steroid caused other problems and shut down your natural testosterone production causing an increase in estrogen. Which in turn could provoke water retention and weight gain. Who knows? There are a million things that can go wrong with any drug use... Go to a Dr. and pray that he is competent. Dr's are humans and we all know humans make mistakes. Science is never exact and drugs are a product of science.

steriods can stimulate gluconeogenesis, which means your body makes its own carbohydrates. normally this stimulates fat burning, but when there are excess levels of steriods you will have extra carbohydrates and even if you only eat protein you will continue to make carbohydrates. there is more to it but just a quick answer.

I must have a really wonderful doctor. I got 10 days of iv steroids 2 months ago for a neurologic condition called NMO. My doctor prescribed something for the stomach upset, the water retention, potassium repletion, and something to help me sleep. I didn't have any of the usual adverse reactions to the steroids. The only reason I happened upon this post is because I've noticed about a 10# weight gain in the past 2 months. I also went off a medicine that seems to suppress appetitie at the same time, so it's really no wonder that I've gained. I never got the 'boost of energy' from the steroids either, so inactivity is another culprit in the weight gain scenario. I went to my primary care yesterday after noticing an area of swelling at the base of my neck, thinking I might have an infection in the gland or something. She said it could be 'fatty deposits' left from the steroids! yuck! and to top it all off, I only got 2 days of increased strength from the steroids and then everything went back to the way it was. I guess no more steroids for me.

I had an epideral injection last September, and one in October. They gave me no relief, so I had an injection in the facet joints in my back, one set in March, and the other in May of this year. I have never had a problem with weight gain. I have been the same weight for 30 years, excluding when I had my two children. I have gained 20 pounds since last September. I can't lose a single pound! You would think by now this would all be out of my system. Any answers out there to help get rid of the weight...this is really depressing..

Well it appears I am not alone in my weight gain due to two Cortoco-Steroid injections and two steroid inhalers. In July I had pneumonia and bronchitis. To help me breath I received a shot and an inhaler. In early September I got bronchitis again and again had a shot and an inhaler. Within a week after the second shot and the second inhaler I noticed I was gaining weight. I have been eating smaller portions, less bread, more veggies, less sugar, etc., and I have been exercising with Zumba. No weight loss, in fact I have been gaining. Since the first week of September I have gained 15 lbs. I am going to the doctor on Thursday to run some blood work and to rule out my thyroid, but considering what I have read here I think the steroids have caused this. I am so angry about this. I have weighed the same weight for years. All the weight I am gaining is in my hips, thighs, butt and waist/stomach. My body shape is no longer the same. I usually do not have a stomach, it has always been flat but now it isn't. Most of my clothes don't fit. I have one pair of dress pants and one pair of jeans that I can wear. Most of my tops are too small except for those that are cut large. Every joint in my body hurts. My back has hurt for over a month. Why isn't this disclosed when you get the shot and the inhalers?

Over the past 6 years, I have received the epidural injections for my lower back twice a year. My weight has went whacko! When I was injured, I weighed a 135...I now weigh 198! I keep trying to lose some of this; I may drop a couple of pounds but the next month I found 4 more. Right now, I went back on the heart diet they gave me two years ago (I did lose 15 pounds on this), drinking water like crazy; unfortunately I have an overactive bladder already and the doctor wants me to take Vesicare to help with that problem. They have now stopped giving me the shots, they only lasted 8 days each time for me; so now I'm on narcotics out the yang-yang. I take Oxycodine twice a day, vicodin 8 times a day, valium 4 times a day and that doesn't count the high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the Mobic just so I can walk around my house. Can't they find something to help those of us who have these weight gain problems? Believe me if I had realized this would happen, I never would have had the first shot...let alone the 36 I have went through. :-(

i was in a carbon monoxide accident, and i had some damage to my frontall cortex of my brain that deals with pleasure, and taste. i feal the pain from hunger all the time, and yet the site of food makes me vomit. its a type of torture nobody can understand. i stay in so much pain from hunger, and fatigue, that its about all i can do to just get a bite or 2 of food in me everyday, and i go 3-6 days without sleep before i blackout from exaustion for an hour or 2. i was told i only lived becouse of my shape at the time. i was a mma fighter, and was 6,2 and weighed 226lbs. now im about 170lbs. steroid shots only make the pain of starvation more intense, and ive not gained a pound since ive been on it. i would give my life to have the problem of needing to lose weight! if you people only knowed how lucky you are. there is a weight loss program i know will work for you. GO TO JAIL!. i can promise you will lose 20-30lbs a month. if its not worth sacrificing to get rid of it, then shut up, and be gratefull you get to taste, and enjoy food.

I woke up on a ventilator in ICU,after 8 days??? on intravenous steroid/protein drip, I couldn't understand why my clothes didn't fit when I got home, even my face looked different.. it was such a strange, frightening time in my life. and 4 years on I have never returned to the woman I was before the asthma attack which caused my hospitalisation. I know that steroids saved me,but I need to know how to counteract the long term effects they have had on my physical, and ultimately ,mental health.

I was diagnosed with Callgenous (so) Colitis 3 years ago and have been on steriods since. I gained 35 lbs mostly around my middle. I have been trying to limit my foods since I have now gone off of them gradually for over 6 months. So far I still weigh the same. I wish someone had an answer as to how long it will take for the steroids to be out of my system. I was a size 8-10 for most of my entire life and now tipping the scales at a size 16-18. If anyone has answers I would appreciate it

youve gained weight because you have eaten more and exercised less. can it be any simpler?
i wish i could blame all my problems on something like steroids...

I have always had a problem with weight. I had lost quite a bit of weight and was walking daily. Looked and felt great until I worked a part time job where I stood for 9 hours. I already had, scoleosis, sciatica, osteoporasis, degenerative discs, etc. Standing made it even worse. I was forced to have steroid epidureals for the pain which at sometimes was unbearable. I have had two shots and have gained 40 lbs. I had no idea that the shots were going to cause me to gain weight. Now I have no idea how I am going to lose it. I only wish I had known, as a prescription ibuprofen does more good than the steroid epidureals in my case. Now I am 60 and fat!!! Hate the way I look and hard to exercise due to the weight..............
