I am a CCRN ICU RN as well. A year ago, a patient grabbed my neck wrong and herinated three discs and caused a severe stenosis. The pain going down my left arm and tingling was absoltuly unbearable. I have now had ( as of today) my FOURTH injection in 5 months which I found out is NOT a good deal due to bone and ligament damage. To top that off, I have gained as of today, 27 pounds since my first shot. I am SO frustrated I can just cry. To top it off, the injections are only lasting a week or two so now I am looking for a reputable nero. We had three of the top three neurosurgeons here in NM, and found out two weeks ago, that two are moving and one is retiring so I have to hang on till June. I am not sure I can do that, and working where I do, I do not want to just grab any neurosurgeon to be messing with such a huge mess. I just cant wait to see how many more pounds I will gain from this last shot. I weigh almost 40 pounds more than I did when I was 9 minths pregnant.

I just came from the National Spine and Pain Center in Columbia, Md where I scheduled three epidural cortisone injections over the next 3 weeks.  When I asked about the safety of cortisone shots, Dr. Patel told me that I would not be on them long enough to cause bone density problems but that the drug causes the part of the brain that tells a body that it is 'full' not to work correctly and therefore many people experience weight gain. He said that he tells all patients to 'plate' their food and only eat what is on the plate rather than wait to feel full. He also said that there would be increased urination.  Though weight gain is the LAST thing thing that I want to happen especially given so much reduced activity related to chronic back pain, I'd rather try the injections than worry about gaining weight

The epidural cortisone injections should not scare you.The steroids,in your case, cortisone, are in general used for a wide range of conditions including more severe of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. What matters most,is how much of the steroid gets into the body.Cortisone to some extent makes your metabolism a bit more sluggish. It may therefore be helpful to restrict your overall calorie intake slightly as your previous intake may be a bit more than you need.If you are also able to do some exercises,it will certainly help. Your doctor is likely to be keeping an eye on your blood sugar (glucose) level. If it has been a while since it was checked then ask to have this looked at, just in case you are beginning to drift up into the diabetic range, which may require specific treatment. But the best way to decrease the side effects of steroids is for their dose to be kept as low as possible, but then there is a limit to how far this can be done and still get the necessary benefits. Unfortunately one cannot completely uncouple the good from the bad sides of steroid treatment.

I was in the hospital for five days with pneumonia...they were giving me iv steroids the whole time I was there. They weighed me when I came in the ER (I was elated at the time because I had just lost 67 pounds, bought new clothes, was feeling good about my weight) on the fourth day the medical tech came into the room to do vitals and he weighed me...I HAD GAINED 36 POUNDS IN LESS THAN 4 DAYS...It had to be a mistake! But it wasn't my body was swollen, I felt like I was about to bust, I was starving...eating everything they would give me...I just want to know how long is it going to take me to get this weight off? It seems to be water weight..but I am not urinating even like I should be, I don't know what to do...someone please let me know if they had a similar situation. Thanks

I am 46 years old, 5'7" and average 125 lbs. I had steroid injections in my neck one month ago, and I now weigh 133 lbs. I have done absolutely nothing different. I still go to the gym twice a week and I eat the same amount of food as I did before. My stomach sticks out really far and makes me look like I'm pregnant. I feel like the scale keeps climbing everyday and that I will have to practically starve myself just so I don't gain more weight. And after all this, it did not help my neck whatsoever. I will NEVER get a cortisone injection again.

Yes, Yes, Yes! Ur so right about the weight gain. My dilemma is, I've been dealing with hip/back pain for 11 yrs, take pain medication, & now, gotta hv an epidural procedure. I didn't want to, (bcz I've had steriod injections b4, suppose to hv been a small dose, but, within 2 weeks, I could hardly get my clothes on) but, I'm trying to get away from the pain.

No I had a steroid epidural yesterday, today I am 5 lbs heavier. I have not really an appetite in over a month cause of pain meds dropped 15 lbs and now whatever I eat I vomit. So I am to assume this is a temporary thing. Gonna get some laxatives and call it a day.

Had epidural steroid shot, put on 5 pounds overnight. I have no appetite so I am hoping a laxative will help with the fluid retention.
