Hello, I had a steroid injection between my 4th and 5th metatarsal at near the toe joints (still waiting to find out which type of steriod). It's now just under 3 months later and a divot has developed in the top of my foot. It has some minor pain associated with it and what feels like a burning sensation at times. I was offered the steroid injection for a potential morton's neuroma but the doctors later agreed I have a bone bruise. I told the doctor that I didn't think the steroid injection was necessary but so long as it couldn't hurt. Of course I was told that it couldn't hurt and not warned about any of the potential side effects. Anyways it looks like I'm in the very early stages of what could be one of these nightmare cases. So far the fat pad and soft tissue on the bottom of my foot is still intact. But I'm very concerned that like you say the bad side effects will start slowly and get worse over the years. I have already noticed a lump of tissue directly underneath the 5th metatarsal head. And have already been brushed off by my GP regarding the soft tissue atrophy on the top of my foot. I'm thinking of asking for a referral to a dermatologist for the saline injections. Have you ever discovered anything regarding treatment of this condition or a specialist I should be referred to? At this point I'm just praying that they didn't use Kenalog and that I'm not one of these extremely rare and unlucky cases. Save me!

And you guessed it, Kenalog strikes again in 2017. Destroying people's bodies with no warning from practitioners for over a decade, Kenalog. Thankfully I only had one shot (not a series or multiple) and the soft tissue on the bottom of my foot seems mostly intact. I'm getting a referral to a dermatologist for the saline injections now. I also learned about platelet rich plasma and stem cell therapies that can restore tissue if it's damaged beyond the bodies ability to repair.

You'd think that with an occurrence of 1-5% that somewhere around 10K to 100K people per year are affected, and yet doctors see no obligation to warn their patients. I can tell you all the possible side effects of a CS injection in less than 60 seconds and would be completely absolved of malpractice, I just don't understand. But I will be making a formal complaint against my podiatrist.

I have a dent resulting from a steroid shot, I was not warned of this side effect. Has anyone sued for this?

I am 7 month out from a single injection (waiting to get records to see what amount and solubility was uses) which I now know was never going to be beneficial. My injection was in the wrist following the aspiration of a benign ganglion cyst. I am getting an MRI Thurs. My skin is very thin from lower top of hand to forearm with fat and muscle atrophy seeming to get worse, not better. Anxious to hear if anyone has tried the saline or fat injections or the stem cell treatment. I found one you tube video on the stem cell treatment.

I am experiencing the same thing you are describing, but my Dr believed me about the pain. He says my shot was placed wrong and the steroid was shot into the muscles above my hip. The wrong placement of the shot caused the steroid to eat my muscles which is where the pain is coming from. I have pain down my leg, my lower back, and hip the pain is so bad so days I cannot walk. There is nothing that can fix it either. The nurse that gave me the shot over dose me as well, she no longer works for my Dr. My dent is rather larger 3-4 inches and about 2 inches deep, it goes down to my bones.

I am so sorry to hear that! Is there exposed bone requiring a covering? I am trying acupuncture and reading up on stem cell therapy- will report back.

Yes I have gotten 3 saline injections. The effects have not been highly visible yet as I hoped they would be given the findings of the medical studies but I think they are making a difference. Depending how much residual steroid crystals remain it may take a few before the cosmetic effects are addressed. I'm guessing they are less effective for me because my steroid injection was in the foot and it's hard to get a good pressurized saline injection where the skin stretches too easily. The doctor said the only risk was infection at the injection site and so long as proper procedure is followed the risk of getting a saline injection is minimal.

Unfortunately for me the injections are all in the top of my foot, which will hopefully remove a lot of the residual steroid crystals. However the main side effect of concern is atrophy of the fat pad or bottom of my foot, really not sure what to do about that. I can tell the area has thinned a little. And the bump under the metatarsal head is potentially a sign of fat pad atrophy. Very concerning as many have said it keeps getting worse. I'm really hoping that going for these saline injections early will clear out the steroid before more damage can be done.

As far a suing goes the answer is that medical malpractice being committed doesn't necessarily mean there are any damages. In order to have a lawsuit that is worth pursuing there needs to be a proven loss of some kind, loss of income or expensive medical procedures that will be required to fix the problem. Pain and suffering damages are limited to 250k and typically will only match the financial loss. And there is a one year statute of limitations on medical malpractice. This is just what I found out for my state, I'm not an attorney.

If you want to find the studies, they are all about "Treatment of steroid induced atrophy with normal saline injections" There have been 3 different studies published on the topic, the first one had 4 patients all adults who got weekly injections. One had a single 51 year old female who got monthly injections at multiple sites, and the last one had two children who got bi-weekly injections. All studies had 100% positive results and no adverse side effects.

This happened to me about 8 years ago. The nurse and I didn't like each other and I thought she did it on purpose. It left a huge half dollar size crater on the right buttocks for years. The pain was in just the SI joint. After that it just got worse and worse. I ended up in surgery them promising me it would fix the right side too. He literally hacked my lower back. Which ended up the screws and all coming lose. Had another surgery to repair the first this last July. Was so careful doing everything right. Then took a transit to an appointment. I was like a rag doll getting tossed around. I yelled screamed and was crying. He never heard me just kept on driving. I called his company the girl just kept getting smart with me. Then I called my insurance coordinator. She got hold of his company and they tried calling him. We could hear his cell phone ringing. He never heard a thing. I noticed he had what I thought were funny looking hearing aids. Turned out they were ear buds. I finally got him to look at me. Told him I needed off the bus. He picked me up 2 hours early. He reminded of an old truck driver. I had worked at a short stop years ago where truck drivers were our biggest customers. He looked like some of the older ones. Hands shaking with a third cup of coffee and 2 bottles of no doze. Anyhow even with tears running down my face. Ive got 4 more stops ive gotta make. Like we were cargo and he had to make his next stop. Ended up he not only hit every bumb and road work he could find. It pulled the cage and screws right out my back. He never even noticed when he let me off. They hospital had a patient portal bus to take me straight to the surgeons office. He just said have a nice day!!! Now I not only need a 3rd surgery. My right side is excruciating pain they won't address due to the mess in my back. It feels like a torn muscle or ligament my guess. And when the weather changes OMG it somehow gets so much WORSE. They gave me lodicain cream. It never helped the pain. But the crater finally disappeared. But it feels like ive been shot with a huge jagged piece of glass. Twisting and turning enough it takes away my breath. Even on strong pain meds. The only relief is a shot of diludid. That only works for about 2 hours. I still can't believe this. I pray each day that God will heal it.

I believe my wife has the same thing. Its called lipoatrophy or loss of subcutaneous fat. We are looking at our options since our doctor then had an xray done and then an MRI. I dont feel it should be our cost? We are not a sue happy family but this has been painful and isnt a good looking since it is about the size of a golf-ball.

Update- my skin thinning and fat atrophy (now month 10) are slightly better and I think could be the Malderma I tried using as well as acupuncture. I do have an attorney looking into my case. The Malderma was just a “hey, let’s try a scar cream” and it has really made a difference-
