Hello, my father is in the hospital right now, fighting with the paralysis. He has been in a car crash and his spinal cord has been seriously damaged. Doctors said that myelin forming cells have been destroyed and therefore his spinal cord is not functioning properly. They were mentioning stem cells technique as the method for trying to heal him and I hope it will work. What are myelin-forming cells anyway?

Those cells are producing myelin, the substance that is needed for forming the protective shield around the cells and it also is active in the transfer of the neuron signals through the cord. Stem cell treatment includes triggering those cells to grow in that direction that will produce healthy myelin forming cells. Much efficient method than trying to reconnect the severed nerves.
