I finished my period just over a week ago, and just about 20 minutes ago I was sitting down to go to the bathroom (sorry for the mental image) and noticed some brown discharge in my underwear. I am 17 years old, I last had sex about 6 months ago so I'm not pregnant, I do masturbate but my best friend thinks this has nothing to do with the discharge.

I am on birth control, and am supposed to take one every day for 21 days after my period, then take none for 7 days, and start a new package. I was taking them while on another medication prescribed by my dermatologist, however after she took me off the other pills I assumed I should stop taking the birth control pills. I called her and she said to continue using them.

About a week ago after I finished my period, I started using them again after 2 - 3 months of being off them. However, I have been forgetful and have not taken them every day, I am somehow 4 pills behind over a span of about 11 days.

I posted this question on Yahoo! Answers, and the only response that has come back was from someone saying it might be serious, it might not be. I read similar questions and the answers said it's just blood, don't worry unless it continues, others said it may be an infection or a disturbance due to the pill.

So, answers seem to vary on the topic. Can I get some other opinions, and is this normal?

Hi,

You should know that many women who are using oral contraceptives experience bloody discharge between periods. New pill users are more likely to experience it than those who have been using the pill for ages. It sounds like you recently stopped the pill for a while and then started again. This could be the cause of your mid-cycle bleeding in this case. Oh, taking the pill at different times of the day also apparently makes bleeding between periods more likely.

My advice? Don't sweat it, but do let whatever doctor prescribed the pill, I assume your dermatologist for acne since you say you are not sexually active right now, know what is happening.
