Hello! I was diagnosed leukemia a year ago. First thing I did when I found out that I am ill, I started to learn as much I could about this disease and possible therapy options. According to my newest blood results I am not responding very well to my present therapy. When I asked my doctor to start with Fludara (since I read about its efficiency) he said that there is a high possibility for neurotoxicity. Is it true? Can Fludarabine be blamed for neurotoxicity?

Hi! It is noticed that severe neurotoxicity occurred with higher doses than recommended but mild neurotoxicity it is also noticed at standard doses. It usually occurs 21-60 days after fludarabine is used and it is still not known how it works. General symptoms are confusion, headache, agitation and paresthesia. If severe effects, as vision changes, occur than it is needed to discontinue with fludarabine treatment. It is always good to know as much as possible about this disease but it is also important to talk to your doctor and have confidence.
