My husband is 50 years old with long experience suffering of hypertension. We were trying with everything starts with some alternative suggestions, and lately he’s under doctors supervising. Seems like it became more serious then it was before. His doctor prescribed him Clonidine, but somehow that medicine wasn’t suitable for him. I would like to know if some side effects are normal, and are there withdrawal symptoms if he decides stop using Clonidine.

With Clonidine, patient should be instructed not to discontinue therapy without consulting physicians. That was something that his doctor should tell him in moment he decided to prescribe Clonidine. Sudden cessation of Clonidine treatment has sometimes results with symptoms such as nervousness and agitation. There were also reported headaches and confusions accompanied or followed by a rapid rises in blood pressure and elevated catecholamine concentrations in the plasma. Likelihood of such reactions to discontinuation of Clonidine therapy appears to be greater after administration of higher doses. Also it might be more likelihood when is continuation of concomitant beta blocker treatment. That’s why special caution is therefore advised in situations like those are. Maybe your husband had some normal side effects of taking CLonidine, and there is no need for stopping with therapy. This is something he should discuss with his doctor, and explain what bother to him.
