Lol!!!!
Reading this entire thread makes me feel like a normal person once more.
I had my depo injection November 2012. It was my first shot and will be my last. At first it was great because I didn't get my period. My sex drive didn't suffer, in fact I'm always the one begging my husband for sex. But after reading all this and looking back, I noticed a definite change in my mood. Usually I'm a pretty chilled out person, but during the first month of depo, I treated my husband like sh*t, and was just a constant crazy b***h. Luckily he was used to my once a month mood swings, so at least he was smart enough to put it down to hormones.
The thing I hated about depo is that it's totally screwed up my cycle. Before I could predict when my period was coming and how much I'd bleed...but now it just drives me nuts how inconsistent my periods are. Around late december my period started again, normal flow and lasted two weeks. Early feb I got my period again, only this time it was extremely light, brown and lasted five days.
The past couple of days I got extremely paranoid that I was pregnant, because I had so many weird pregnancy like things happening to my body.....sensitive breasts, the light, brown period, weight gain round my abdomen, random headaches, tighter vagina and constipation. I took two tests, but they were both negative, and after reading this thread I now know that I can just blame depo for all my problems.

Hey all of you who had the depo shot. I had my first shot a little over a month ago and I have had a persistant migraine. It will not go away. Some days are good and some days (like today) are just terrible.
Anyone have any idea of how long it takes to be completely OFF the depo shot? How many weeks unti it is completely out of your system? because i cannot bare this anymore.

I had the Essure done and my doctor insisted I have the Depo shot to make sure I didnt get pregnant over the 90 day waiting period. I was 41 years old, a marathoner, a triathlete, recently remarried, was in the best shape of my life and then THE SHOT. The first week I thought I had the flu. I had muscle cramps and fatigue, nausea, headaches, I could hardly get up. I went to my doctor thinking I was sick, but he couldnt find anything and my labs looked perfect. He decided it was the Depo shot, said my body would get used to it and then it would be gone in 90 days. My body NEVER got used to it. I am now almost a year out and I still have side effects. I didnt have a period for 9 months, then I had a terrible one for 2 weeks. Its now 2 months later and today I spotted a little. Today I went to a female OB/GYN to get my life back. I have tried to fight this on my own. I have continued to run and bike and swim and train, work, and take care of my family, but nobody seems to realize how hard it is now as compared to before. The OB/GYN today was astonished that the doctor gave me a Depo shot over 40. She said she doesnt even offer it in her office. She thinks its the worst thing ever made. She drew my labs today and I hope on Tuesday when I go back she has news to help me feel better. Worse part is the doctor assured me there would be no side effects with 1 single dose. Ohhh, and I'll just add I also gained 10 pounds in less than a month. I run, bike, and swim more than 70 miles a week. My diet is spot on nutritionally. So let somebody tell me it wasnt the Depo shot. Hang in there, there has to be hope to feeling better. I plan to take my life back and I tell everybody never ever take that shot!!!!!!!!

Hi all, I've been on depo for 6 years and decided to stop as I had concerns about it thinning my bones. I had my last shot in sept 2012 which ran out dec 2012 past. Ever since I have been quite unwell, tired, bloated, gassy all the time. I've never had any side effects on the depo shot apart from my periods stopping. No periods since it ran out in dec yet tho. Feel terrible and stomach is bloated all the time. i am very active, gym everyday and eat really fresh, clean foods. I'm wondering how long I have to wait to get back to feeling normal

Hey everyone, I just turned 18 years old and got on Depo a little over 3 months ago. It was my first and only shot. My symptoms were pretty much like everyone else's just not quite as drastic. I did cry more than I usually do and I've always been very thin ( I weighed 103 pounds) and I never had much of an appetite but as soon as I got on the shot all I did was eat! I was very tired ALL the time and had my first panic attack ever while on the shot. I woke up one night screaming running out of my room in fear that I was being attacked or something. It was very traumatizing and I don't think it's a coincidence it happened during the 3 months.
I missed my first period and when I did have it it was irregular and brown and I've had it for 2 months now. It's a semi medium flow and I have to wear a pad or tampon every single day. I want to see my doctor about taking medication to regulate my cycle but my mom suggests I just wait it out and let my body return to normalcy on its own.
For the young girls reading this, please don't take the shot unless your absolutely sure it's worth all the possible side effects. Also you may not have the same effects as everyone else in fact you may not have any. But ask if yourself if it's worth the risk to find out. Like me you may get an irregularly long period and not even be able to have sex which for most people is the entire reason you even get on the shot.
I hate the side effects but I am also grateful for Depo because while I was on the shot the condom broke when my boyfriend (ex now) and I had sex one night. If it wasn't for the shot I would be an expecting mother right now! So Depo does serve it's purpose but before you commit yourself just be prepared. Everyone's body is different and you honestly won't know how yours will react until you try. But again make sure it's worth it, and make sure your boyfriend is worth it and would be willing to stand by you through the end. I've been reading the posts and most women lose relationships due to the severity of the emotional changes. I didn't have severe changes; my boyfriend and I broke up simply because we drifted apart it really had nothing to do with the shot.
Anyway, I just weighed myself and I am currently 102, so I guess despite the seemingly uncontrollable eating, I was lucky to have a fast metabolism I guess :) Well good luck to you and hope my response helped!

Hi just wanted to give you an update, I had one shot last year and when it was time to get the second I refused. It was due on the 13th of January. Two months later I am getting a bit of bleeding. I've been trying to lose weight and struggled until the last 2 weeks where I have lost 4lb so think the shot is wearing off now. Hang on everyone x

Depo sucks so bad! I got the shot 11/15/12 it is now 3/14/13. I am STILL bleeding. The bleeding hasnt stopped since day one. Ive been bleeding for four months every day, light to medium to heavy. I have absolutely no idea when the bleeding will stop. Every time I think its about to leave it comes right back with a vengeance. I have not gotten another shot. I think I will go to my gyno next week and get put on birth control pills to regulate the bleeding. Ive also had headaches, panic attacks, anemia, tiredness and a diminishing sex drive. Not to mention Im sick of buying tampons and pads. Luckily my significant other is not tripped out by bleeding and my funky moods. I cannot wait til this is over with. This is the worst thing ever!

I am 22 years old, i was on low level birth control until Feb 2012 when my doctor told me it was best to go on depo to stop my strong period pain and weekly migraines. It was the WORST decision of my life as i had mood swings the whole way through the first shot but it did stop my period the doctor convinced me the mood swings were nothing of a concern and i reluctantly got my second shot in may 2012. through out the whole second shot i had mood swings to point i would cry over nothing than be raging at my partner for telling me he was worried by my moods and. by aug 2012 i was due for my third shot but refused to go back on it because my moods were such a concern to me, all though my doctor had a different opinion and said i was fine two weeks after stopping depo i went on the mini pill to help bring back my returned period into a regular cycle, i thought i was lucky and returning to myself but by oct 2012 i was not myself in fact i was in such a bad state i ended up nearly killing myself, i had a mood swing over the washing machine not working and blacked out by the time i came to i was surrounded by empty pill packets. thankfully i was quick to think and my parents rushed me to hospital i spent the next two days thinking i tried to kill myself and so did everyone else. on talking to a doctor and specialist i discover i in fact i would never know why i took the pills because of the black out but that the black out it self was caused by my mental mood swings i had been having from the depo build up in my system...
I stopped taking birth control from oct 2012 because of the reaction depo had on me i urge anyone thinking about it to stop and read what i or anyone else on this site has to say about it, i understand everyone is different but this drug has major side effects.I still today have trouble with my period and was wondering if anyone else could help me. i am on no birth control and my cycle returned sept2012 but since than has not be regular it ranges from a 24 day cycle to a 35 day one, to a 46 day one and back to a 43 day one. i currently have my period but it has only lasted three days on speaking with a doctor i have been told to come back in two months if i am not pregnant but i am not trying for a baby as yet maybe in a few years for now tho i want to know how long after stopping depo did people have there period return and once returned how long until the had a regular cycle?

hey everyone.... i was just wondering if anyone could help me. i am 22 years old only had two depo shots my last one wore off in aug 2012 its now march 2013 and i still haven't got a regular period, my period did return as in sept 2012 and i have had a cycle ever since but my cycle has ranged from a 24 day one, all the way to a 46 day one, my current period has only lasted three days and i am on NO form of birth control. i am not aiming to get pregnant i would just like to know how long it took for people to settle back into a normal and consistent menstrual cycle?
also i suggest no one ever use depo without full warning and if people do feel they are having mood swings please do not get another injection without out a full health screening as i only had two injections and through out both i stressed to my doctor that the were bad and uncontrollable my doctor told me it would wear off and i would be fine but i was not convinced i stop taking depo in august 2012 and by October 2012 i was in hospital after suffering a mood swing and blacking out and i assume as i will never know what i was doing i tried to kill myself as when i came to i was surround by empty pill wrappers and bottles, after a full doctor screening and psychological screening it was determined that my concern about mood swings was correct that the build up of it stayed in my body and was the reason i had such a adverse reaction to a mood swing. this drug is dangerous and doctors should be more aware of what there patients are saying, since that day i have been off birth control all together and everyone in my life says i have completely changed from what i was like while on depo and are now the happiest i have ever been.

Hello! I'm also going through this (and besides that have had problems with birth control in the past). I started the shot in August; had a tumultuous time with men from that point until October or so...Then I met my boyfriend. Always had a great time with him; knew I felt something. Then, soon after we became official in January, I started doubting it. Hard. Baseless, ruminating thoughts that have not gone away. I have some good days, but they're always there. I'm in therapy and trying to get it under control (I also possibly have SAD), but I'm still very nervous. I cry nearly every day. It's now late March; I won't be getting my next shot in April.
I'm curious: where do you stand now, with your doubts? Did they finally overcome you and end the relationship? Or did you come off the depo and return to normal? Please let me know ASAP; other advice/insight welcome as well.

After coming off depo i soon returned to normal and m partner and i are better than ever just remind yourself and your partner it is only the depo making you feels this way it helps to know that he understands what is going on and to know once you are off it he will still be there.

you will return to normal it just takes time. i suffered everything you are feeling six months on i am back to myself and happier than ever. please take care tho because people have suffered just as badly with coming off it as being on it... the best thing i suggest is speaking with your doctor about what can stabilize you moods while you get you self back to normal. if i am reading correctly you only had two shots? if so than you will hopefully be back to your self in a month afterwards that's how long it took for me to regain control of my body
