My son has been on Dilantin(Phenytoin) for 8 years almost. I was wondering what are long term side effects from this drug? Does anyone know?

My daughter is for more that 10 years and Dilantin is a safe drug. However, osteoporosis has been associated with what are called enzyme inducing drugs, so calcium supplementation, exercise and diet are important. I ask around about it and also, to prevent birth defects anyone on anti-epileptic medications should take folic acid to help prevent defects. Dilantin has certainly passed the test of time.
