I am now 4 days late and have had light bleeding/spotting for 2 days now... my period is usually spot on... Hubby and I aren't actively trying, but we are not using any contraception. Is it too early to take a test?

No, it's not too early. If you're late you can test. Be sure to use ONLY your first morning urine when you test, your wake up pee, for the best accuracy - it does matter. Don't use a cheap test either.
If it's negative and you've still not had your period in about a week, retest.
