I just started my birth control on the sunday after my period started, like my gyno told me to, and this time, my period has been a lot lighter than normal, but it is also a  lot longer than it usually is, is this normal?

It is quite normal and expected that you have changes in your period or experience spotting/breakthrough bleeding when you start birth control. That's because the pill contains hormones that have direct effect on your ovulation and your menstrual cycle - basically, your body needs time to adjust itself to a larger dose of hormones than it was producing before. But, this is not something that should last for more than this month or the next, in fact, the pill should make your periods not only lighter, but shorter as well.
