Hi. I am 23 years old and for about the past 4 months my period has been really irregular. About a year ago I got out of an unhealthy relationship and I had gained quite a bit of weight then but even through all that I still always got my period on time. I have not had sex since a year ago and I am clean. Lately I have also been having brown discharge. My period has not really came though in the past couple months. I will bleed a tiny bit one day and thats it. Do you know whats wrong with me. I know im stressed out but I've been more stressed than this before. I also have not been on birth control for about 3 years now.

Most doctors say when it comes to change in menstrual cycle to wait for at least 3 cycles to pass to make sure it is not something transient. Such problems occur from time to time in women with no apparent cause but do not represent a long term problem.

Stress can cause menstrual problems and if you haven’t experienced it before, it doesn’t mean you won’t experience problems now. If stress doesn’t cause the irregularities, it could certainly contribute to them.

Considering it’s been over three cycles in a row and you are still experiencing the same problem, I suggest you visit a gynecologist.

I can’t say with certainty, I can’t even guess because there are many things that could have provoked the problem. For example, unusual physical exertion, bacterial infection (non sexual), an otc or even prescribed medicine, an illness.

Ovarian cysts (which are benign) can also interfere with your cycles, as well as other growths that could appear on the cervix or in the uterine.
