Hi. I suffer from some sort of a skin rash and joint pain, went to see a doctor and he sent me down for an ANA test. The result came back positive. He told me it`s possible that I have lupus?! Could it be so? Does positive ANA mean that I have lupus?

Hi. A positive ANA may suggest an autoimmune disease, but further testing is necessary. ANA can be positive in people without autoimmune disease. Must say that more than 95% of lupus patients have a positive ANA, but most of the people with positive ANA don`t have lupus. You have some subset tests, like anti-dsDNA and anti-SM, they will show if you have lupus.
