Hi, my child was sent to perform ANA test and it gave positive result, but now doctor suspects a false positive result and wants more tests to be done. He says that a diagnose can not be made only on one test. What indicates false positive pediatric ANA test?

Many doctors have come to the conclusion that a positive ANA test can safely be ignored unless other clinical signs of autoimmune diseases are also present. Other simple laboratory tests like ESR elevated or cytopenias needs to be done to confirm a diagnosis of lupus or alike connective tissue disease. A child with a swollen joint and positive ANA test can not be diagnosed with autoimmune disease unless other confirmatory evidences are present, because of high rate of false positive ANA tests. This issue is fascinating indicating that breaking of immunological tolerance is really quite common, but it is relative whether it will result in a disease.
