I had two epidural steroid injections for scoliosis and degenerate disk disease in my lower back. The first one was on April 16, 2012 & the second was on Aprl 30, 2012. I was on my period during the first injection and then got another one after with a week in between. On May 22nd, 2012 I started another period that lasted two weeks to June 4th, 2012. June 5th- June 7th I had pink spotting. June 8th I am back to having bleeding with lots of blood clots. I have never had a real problem with blood clots and I have them all the time now. My period is pretty regular and only lasts about 4 days. Endometriosis runs in my family so I am very scared. I am hoping the irregular bleeding is from the injections. I am wondering if any of you are having blood clots?

Wow...I'm experiencing the same problem. I had 3 epidural steroid injections of my lower back and my period is out of control. I've had my period since May 25th, after being late a week and it's extremely frustrating!! I was so nervous/scared that I scheduled an appt with my GYN, and she said that this was a normal but rare side affect. All of my test came back fine, but she did ask me to keep her informed if the bleeding/clotting didn't stop in 10 days.

To address the situation, I made an appt to see my Pain Management Doctor and provided him with a piece of my mind….he never mentioned to me that this was a side effect. After suffering over 3 months with back pain…I am now dealing with the same pain along with my period (TOTAL MADNESS). He was extremely apologetic and guaranteed me that moving forward he would provide this risk to all of his female patients.

My only recommendation is to continue to monitor this and stay closely connected with your GYN on this.

I used a steroid cream ONCE, and although it was only two weeks since my last period, I started to bleed for a few hours (then thankfully stopped again). I have a complete conviction that it was the steroid, as this has never happened before.

I had a set of three esi's over a month and haven't stopped my cycle since and that was two months ago. Just when you think it has stopped-psych-wrong answer. Puts a damper on your personal life and trying to have a baby. Now I am waiting to have surgery and rods put in my back and a fusion. Hopefully that will fix me. Although I don't recommend the injections, I had to go through it to see if they worked before surgery was an option. Sucks.

I had a cortisone shot in my knee today and afterwards I remembered why I avoid them! My next period after a shot is always prolonged, but afterwards they usually go back to normal. This didn't happen to me at first, but it has the last maybe 3-4 times in an eight year period. There seems to be no doubt about the correlation to me, but I'm not sure what it stems from.

I wrote back in September about my two injections, cysts, and irregular bleeding. At the time my husband and I were trying to get pregnant and I just wanted to report back in with what worked for me because I actually was probably pregnant when I wrote my initial message but didn't know it yet. If I could recommend one thing to treat these awful symptoms, it would be acupuncture. Start with moxibustion and move write on on all the fertility points. That stopped my bleeding right away and started moving me back into a normal cycle. I really wish docs would take these side effects more seriously and start publishing some literature. I hope you all get quick relief and if you're trying to start a family that you can do it stress free.

i am so happy that i found this website. i had my first epidural injection in my lower spine on june 8th and on june 14th i had gotten my period and still do on this very day (40 days). i went to my gynocologist and they did blood work and internal sono showed a cyst. blood work showed that my body was no longer producung progesterin! i was then put on Provera for 5 days to stop the bleeding and it did not work. i let my gynocologist know and he advised that i go back to see him right away. the day before i went back to see my gynocologist i had an appointment for another epidural shot with my pain management doctor. 2 days ago i had another epidural injection and i mentioned to him as im on the table about to get my shot that i have been bleeding since june 14th and thats when he advised that its most likely a side effect from the epidural injections (i was SHOCKED and mad at myself for not doing my research before i started these injections). yesterday i went back to my gynocologist and let him know what my pain management doctor had said, so my gynocologist said thats why im bleeding and he couldnt help me nd cannot stop the bleeding. I was devastated that my gynocologist would say that to me with no regard at all. after i started yelling at my doctor, he said to have my pain management doctor call him. not sure what the end result is going to be and im so nervous. i need these epidural injections for my sciatica. im bloated, have headaches, and irritable and i just want the bleeding to stop. i hae read alot of these posts about epidural injections not helping them, but in my case it works

I had a steroid shot and was started on oral steroids (the 60/60, 40/40, 20/20 routine) after a reaction to a bug bite in May. Three days later, I began spotting on and off until July when I suddenly stopped. Last night I started my period, after not having one since 1988. Yes I am post menopausal and am now menstruating again after 24 years!!!!!!!!!! No one said anything about this occurring as a side affect, otherwise I would certainly have refused the shot, at least. We probably should all write the drug companies so they advertise this as a side effect!

From reading the blogs on this posting board. I believe im having similar symptoms to my injections for my 3 herniatied disc. Its just cursious to know that know doctor has spoke of this to me. The first shot i didnt have a period for 2mons , the second shot i had a period for 2mon and now im on my period for the last 2weeks. Until today ive visited the doctor for and i thought i was pregnant , then they told me the second time it was my fibroid. I just wonder if i go back this time what they will tell me. Smdh Its like what do you need a doctor for sometimes!!!!

I had 3 steroid injections for a herniated disc. After my third, I had virtually non-stop periods with a break of a day or so for 4 to 5 months. My pain med doctor and gynecologist told me that steroid injections cause changes in the Menstrual Cycle. Basically, I had to just wait until the periods stopped. I several dizzy spells during the ongoing periods, but luckily nothing too serious.

Wow! I am experiencing the same thing!! Had my 1st ever ESI on Dec 11 started bleeding the following day today is the 19th and it's still going strong!! :( It's heavy all day and night where as normally I only have one heavy day and it's actually usually over night into the morning on the 2nd day of a cycle that lasts 5 days at the most!! I also want to mention that I was in horrible pain (low back, pelvic, legs) after the injection. I cried day and night for three days straight :( even the strong pain killers prescribed by my pain mgmt dr provided no relief :( a week later and although the pain is not as intense, I still have to use ice and pain meds through out the day and night and my original sciatic nerve pain has also returned :( i was certainly not told about the risk of abnormal uterine bleeding, and believe 100% the the steroid injection is responsible for that and my increase in pain!!! I WILL NEVER HAVE ANOTHER ONE OF THESE INJECTIONS!! HOPING SINCE I ONLY HAD THE ONE THESE HORID SIDE EFFECTS WILL FADE SOON! Good luck and prayers and hugs to any facing this as well!
