can stoping trazadone cold turkey cause withdrawl symptoms if so what kind?

Yes.......it can. Trazadone acts upon the neurotransmitters in the brain altering the levels of about four. Primarily the transmitter serotinin.Serotonin is a booster or base transmitter in the brain. The brain will alter it's transmitter levels in response to the drug. After continued use...the brain builds tolorence as it would with any drug that effects the nuerotransmitter levels. When this occurs the brains nuerotransmitter levels are now based on the level of the drug.In a sense the brains function is "tied" to the drug. So sudden withdrawl from it will result in symptoms. You should reduce your dosage in thirds every 2 weeks. That is the usual loading time of most drugs acting on the transmitters of the brain.

PLEASE, beware of Trazodone, Paxil and all the rest.
These are dangerous drugs that can ruin your whole life. I am 62 years old and have been dealing with depression and anxiety for most of my life. After years of suffering on Paxil etc., and constantly having the doctors INCREASE my dosage because I wasn't feeling well, being told I would have to be on this for the rest of my life, I was lost.
While on vacation I lost my prescription and went in to the most horrible of withdrawal symptoms, I decided to quit.
I quit cold turkey, but it was a terrible experience.
Back to the doctor who prescribes Trazodone for mild depression and severe insomnia. I went for this drug because it was NOT listed as an SSRI.
I wound up at 300mgs at bedtime for the last 4 years. With both these drugs I became a different person, one my family couldn't recognize. This phase is a slow process and one doctors do not acknowledge. YOU (or your close family) have to be able to see the changes in YOURSELF, which is hard when you are doped up. Recently I became snowed in and ran out of Trazadone. It took about 4 days before the withdrawals set in and when they did, I would gladly have blown my head off had I not gotten help immediately from a neighbor. DANGER!
My doctor tells me to keep taking it. I will not. I will not have my life controlled by medicine that harms.
On my own I have cut my dosage by 50mgs each night for the last 4 nights. In two weeks I will reduce it by another 50mgs. I know this is going to be tough. I can feel withdrawals as I type this now. High anxiety, panic, heart palpations~the works~uncomfortable but bearable, because I am determined.
Do not believe doctors alone, Carefully RESEARCH for YOURSELF any thing you put in your mouth .
PLEASE, don't take any of this stuff for more than a few months. Nothing you are feeling now is worth the agony you will suffer while taking these meds and getting off them. NO one truly knows what this stuff does to the human brain, no idea of the results of long-term use, NOTHING.
Since there is little info available on this stuff, I will post again to keep you updated on the withdrawal symptoms and how I am doing. I wish you luck if you travel this road with me.
I am also a retired Registered Nurse and I got sucked into it~be careful and don't wind up like me!

Trazadone withdrawl is like a living hell. Your heart races, you cant breath and you feel like you are going to die. I am taking valium to ease the heavy chest discomfort for now, and a few grains of a 100 mg tablet every night to try to wean off. I can sympathize with your issues because Im going through it now. Just a complete hellish exxperience and this drug should be outlawed.
