I am 51 year old female who was diagnosed as hyperthyroid 4 years ago. I had a multi nodular goitre. On 2/5/08 I underwent a total thyroidectomy. The pathology showed a papilary carcinoma. No further treatment is planned for this as it was very small and totally contained within the removed thyroid. 4 weeks later I still have not regained my voice. I speak in a husky whisper, so I can communicate with someone in front of me but not in any noisy environment. The surgeon said my vocal nerves were identified and preserved. My scar is also keloid and looks quite pronounced. I am hoping to hear from anyone who had voice issues post thyroiedectomy. How long before you got your speaking voice back and did you start any investigations into why your voice had not returned? I am having a laryngoscopy this week. I work in a call centre so cannot return to work until my voice returns. I would love to hear from others with voice loss.

Hi, I suffer from the same problem. After surgery I could only whisper for days and now I can speak little louder but very hoarse and raspy. I had largngoscopy down twice, the last one was yesterday. NET doctor said a good sign showing that my left side of voice cord starts moving little bid,. When you have yours done ask your doctor if voice cord is moving at all. He should ask you to say e, or a and cough to make it is moving.
If the recurrent cord is severed, the voice will not return. If only bruised, it may repair itself some taking 3-6 months, other 2 years.....
Life is hard without being able to talk. I have to force my voice out when answering my cell...
God bless you in your recovery.

I had thyroidectomy a month ago. Had left vocal box palsy after operation. When I am just out of bed I have a somewhat better voice, but it deteriorates as time passes. When will I be ok?

I had a parathyroidectomy two years ago, and during the last year my voice was hoarse enough to consult an ENT surgeon. By the start of this year, I had lost my ability to speak. My voice hasn't recovered and I still have sticky saliva. When will I have my voice back?
