I wondered if anyone can help me? I'm a fairly new type 2 diabetic man and I'm in my mid 40's. I was told I'd got diabetes about 6 months ago and started to taking metformin about 2 months ago to help control my blood sugars. I started the metformin on 500mg tablets twice a day and my doc has increased my dose twice since I started taking it so now I'm taking 4 tablets in the day. Why has he upped my dose and will he keep doing it? I've felt okay but I'm worried that if he keeps putting it up I might start having side effects. Is there a maximum dose? Please help me?

Hey – you’ve raised a really good point about how medication gets managed with you first get diagnosed with diabetes. Many people worry about taking bigger and bigger doses of things like metformin, but the truth of the matter is that you doc will have your best interests at heart and will only do what they think best. In answer to your question most people start out at 500mg bd (so twice a day) and then with monitoring of your blood glucose and HbA1c will decide whether or not you need more. But it does take some time, and you need to be patient. The maximum dose of metformin is 2500mg a day – so 5 tablets at 500mg or you can get bigger doses of 850mg which are given in a once daily prep. Whichever way you doc decides to treat you, make sure you stick with what he says and if you start getting what you think are side effects see your nurse for advice but don’t drop the dose cos it can send your blood sugar off. I hope that helps you and you get sorted with the right dose.
