I would like to know what is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. My friend’s mother has just been diagnosed with that condition and I can see that she is very sad and desperate. She said that her mother does not have much to hope for now, and that her illness is very serious, with fatal outcome. Is that true?

ALS – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a condition that affects the nerve cells responsible for the control of our voluntary muscles. It usually begins with muscle twitches or difficulties with speech. Later, these symptoms become more serious. There is no cure, only therapies that are trying to subdue the symptoms, but that is all doctor can do. Even causes of this disease are still unknown, even though there are many theories.
