Hi. You are right when you say that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a serious disease. It affects nerve cells that control voluntary muscles. In the beginning there is twitching or weakness in arms and legs. In final stage, muscles that control movements, speaking, eating and breathing are affected. If it is discovered earlier, then life expectancy is better. You should support your friend. Treatment will not be so easy for him. You can even consult with his neurologist. Good luck!
