Im 17 and i started YAZ birth control about 17 days ago and I'm not sure if my body is getting used to it or if this isn't the right choice for me. My face (which is usually pretty clear/normal with a pimple or zit every so often) has been breaking out like crazy - its never been this bad. I also started to get brown discharge today when I was having sex and terrible cramps. I've been reading ridiculously bad reviews about this BCP - along with really good ones. Is my body just getting used to this and I should wait it out a month or two?

Hello my dear!
I too have been hearing many negative things about Yaz, but for me at least, it has been the ONLY birth control to work properly with my body. I suffer from dysmenorrhea and that has caused incredibly painful cramping, contractions, and PMDD before and during my period. When I lost my insurance, my new insurance company required me to exhaust my resources with their "approved" birth controls before they would write any kind of exemption for me and cover my specific brand. I was forced to try over 3 different birth controls, putting my body through very difficult, painful, and troublesome hormonal changes. On Orth-Tricyclen Lo, I actually bled for over 3 weeks in my "trial" period with it.
My advice to you would be to discuss these new side effects with your doctor and see what he or she has to say. If the birth control is causing these things to happen, then perhaps Yaz isn't the right birth control for you. Normally, Yaz's side effects include CLEARING of acne, weight loss, and an alleviation of negative symptoms associated with painful periods. So perhaps your body is having a negative reaction to the Yaz, and it may be advisable to try another form of birth control pill or maybe even a different method altogether if you are so inclined. There are so many different kinds out there now and that's very reflective of the fact that every woman's body is different and what may work well for some may not for others.
Yaz and Yasmin are a bit different from other birth controls in that it contains a different hormone called DRSP (I sound like the commercial, (';-)')) and it also causes a higher potassium content in your body. For whatever reason, the makeup of Yaz has been the only birth control to not only alleviate ALL of my painful period and dysmenorrhea symptoms but regulate my hormones in such a way that it was able to clear my life-long acne in a way that no other treatment has been able to. I'm sorry that it has not been working as well for you thus far. And it is still very much a possibility that your body is just going through its own hormonal changes in getting used to this new medication. The only one who may be able to answer that conclusively is your MD. Is this the first birth control pill you have ever tried? Or is there a reason that you have switched to Yaz, if that is the case?
