I've been on 100 to 200 mg of zoloft for 7 years.  I have fibromyalgia and I'm seeking natural ways to get better.  I have detoxed from several pain medicines and have tried to get off zoloft several times.  Even when I cut it down by 25 mg I go into a deep depression.  I work and am not able to work when I feel like that.  I was wondering if anyone knew the difference between getting off of zoloft cold turkey or going down 25 mg every 10 days (which a doctor told me to do).  I plan on taking a month off of work to do this and I'm thinking that doing it gradually will take me too long.  I've already changed my diet tremendously.  I have only been eating very healthy foods for about a month.  I would love suggestions.  I know that it's going to be tremendously hard but it's time to do it!

Hi Joe- i see you posted a month ago- how are you feeling? I'm 8 weeks off the zoloft and unfortunately still feel AWFUL. I tapered down very slowly - cutting a 50mg pill into 8 so no one could accuise me of reducing too quickly. I seem to have developed anxiety- i have pains all over my body (expecially left arm) chest pains, panic attacks, numbness, tingling, stomach ache. Of course i also went through the ear popping, zaps, vertigo at the start of the withdrawal. 8 weeks. surely this isn't right???!!!

I'm VERY glad I found this forum because I feel like sh*t right now. I went cold turkey with zoloft 3 days ago and it's PURE HELL! And no,I'm not overreacting even slightest, this is terrible. Like withdrawal from heroin or other serious drugs. I have diarrhea, nausea, awfully terrible headache and muscle pain(everything in my body hurts),trouble seeing(everything is brightest),vertigo,RAPID heart beat(and when I say rapid I really mean rapid and totally out of control),insomnia and excessive fatigue. I'm feeling like I'm about to start banging my head over the wall, that's how bad I feel right now. I recommend to everyone to NOT EVER ATTEMPT cold turkey, because it's really crazy. I didn't want to wean myself off it,I don't want to take this horrible drug anymore even one more day,but I guess it would be a lot better for you all to not try this..I can only hope that this will get better, but there is no way, even if I'm falling apart,to take this horrible medication again. I'm done with fuc*ing Zoloft forever. To all of you, stay strong and don't let this scam drug destroy you. Don't even think to give up from weaning yourself of it.

Hi Everyone,
My first time on this site.  I have been on sertraline for about 8 years now and am sick of it.  Tried getting off it gradually quite a few times, but tears returned way too soon.......therefore continued on with it.
Last weekend decided to go 'cold turkey', and have been OK, a bit lethargic, tummy aches, but the very worst thing is trying to sleep at night, it's like I have ants in my legs and lower back, and cant relax enough to get to sleep.  Does anyone know how I feel, and are there any suggested 'remedies' out there?
I am dreading the next few nights/weeks with the 'ants' (muscle problems)
Cheers, in advance

Hi Wenham62 congratulations on your decision to quit sertraline. I posted a couple of weeks ago and I've been off sertraline completely for 10 weeks. I only started taking it in October last year so was on it for 5-6 months. I;m still experiencing the withdrawals unfortunately. I'm just writing to say i do know exactly what you mean when you talk about the 'ants' sensation. I find having a bath before I go to sleep really helps allieviate some of these symptoms and hopefully if i'm tired enough I can fall asleep for a couple of hours before it wakes me up again. From my experience of the withdrawals I've had various phases - the anxiety, the aches and pains all over my body, the eye pain, the burning skin (like I have sun burn) the crawling (ants sensation) and the tingling skin. I wish you luck with your recovery- i know from reading these boards most people don't suffer for the length of time that I have.

Thanks so much for your reply. I'm plodding along fairly well I think, & have got some paracetamol with codeine to help me sleep which has been great (I only take one & am not going to use these for too long). I also take daily, St John Wort & Magnesium. Good luck & hope you're symptoms disappear very soon.

Zoloft is very hard to stop. The withdrawal is painful and long lasting. Even after tapering off for 30 days, I was in terrible pain. I went to a homeopathic MD who prescribed 5HTP and I took that for another month after stopping the Zoloft completely.

It is not your fault when a Dr. prescribes something he knows nothing about. There were several times when my prescription ran out and I didn't have a refill in time for my next dose. One time I ended up in the emergency room, got no sympathy or support, nobody knew what they were dealing with. Glad to be free of it.

Idk how all this works with the whole posting a discussion, but I am currently taking Zoloft, and all you guys are scaring me. Okay, so this is my story, I have been on Zoloft for about a year and a half since I got diagnosed with anxiety. I am on 50 mg as needed with my adderall. I tried Lexapro first, but that made me extremely sick and so my Dr. had me switch to Zoloft. My adderall gives me panic attacks and when my panic attacks mix with my heart problems, I get seizures. I have to take adderall for my A.D.D which I've been diagnosed with since I was seven. And trust me I have tried nearly every med there is out there for adderall throughout the last 16 years. Anyways, Zoloft is my preventative med for panic attacks, and Xanax to stop my panic attacks in their tracks. Needless to say, Zoloft has jacked up my life. Never had depression till I started it, have NO sex drive whatsoever anymore, and I've become like bipolar. Worst side effects ever!! I am now looking to change to Wellbutrin so I can get my libido back. I NEED it back. Lately I will go weeks without sex. My bf is loving and understanding, but it hurts to see and know I'm not pleasing him. I have gone a week without my Zoloft with NO problem before, but now I want to be done with it for good and switch. I can't just not take it because seizures totally suck and so does anxiety. I really don't want these side effects, and feel like from past experience that I might be able to go cold turkey and just switch to a different one, but I need wise advice from those who know and experience similar problems to what I am going through. PLEASE HELP!!

Hi again

Well it's 5 months later, and sadly I gave in trying to stop sertraline. The 'ant's sensation' wouldn't go away, and one day I found myself crying endlessly for absolutely no reason, so I am still taking 25mg per day, but the muscular pain is excruciating at times, and never ceases.

hi, wenham. Interesting to hear your experience with the wd. I'm 7 months out now and up until recently have been experiencing the wd every day. Had aches, pains, pinches, tingling, crawling everywhere and bad anxiety, panic attacks. I've actually had 2 weeks onf minimal symptoms so am hoping that i'm getting better. Completely understand your reasons for going back on it. I have to say these past 7 months have been the worst in my life. Doctors didn't believe me when i told them i was experiencing prolonged withdrawal so i've basically been alone with it. Anyway as i say i hope this spell of relief might be a sign that my brain is healing. What i've also learnt is reinstatement as you've done isn;t always a guaranteed method to stop the wd symptoms. If you decide to taper i've done a lot of reading online and i think the best way for us who are sensitive to withdrawing like us is to taper no more than 10% of your current dose every few weeks so your next dose should be 22.5 mg. This should minimise any withdrawal symptoms. When i was struggling i asked my GP if they prescribed sertraline in liquid as it's easier to reduce in liquid form but apparently they don;t have it in the uk. Good luck. I truly truly understand what you're going through and i send you my heartfelt sympathy.

Hi RxSarah,
I have no personal experience with switching meds.
However... i have close a frend who wanted to switch from zoloft to wellbutrin and this is the schedule the doctor prescribed :50 mg Zoloft / 150 mg Wellbutrin for a month; then 25 mg Zoloft / 300 mg Wellbutrin for another week, then no Zoloft, just 300 mg Wellbutrin.
She actually found that too harsh on her system and experienced wd from zoloft but this cross taper must work for some! Sorry i can't be any more help

Aintlifegrand, how did you get on with the 5htp? When i was in terrible trouble with the wd a few months ago i phoned a help line and they recommended i take 5HTP too. i tried but my nervous system is shot to pieces and i still can't take even a fish oil/vitamins or a paracetamol. I've developed hypersenstivity to everything. It's a shame i can't take pain killers for my body pains. How are you now? when did you stop the zoloft?

Hi Hels, it's such fun, isn't it!!! I really hope for your sake that you've beaten it. The 'liquid' version would be a good thing, if there was such a creature. So did you actually reduce yours at the rate of 10%? If so, HOW? Would be near impossible to measure this, I would have thought.

Good luck, keep happy!
