I'm not completely sure of the link. I know my son could have developed some of his asperger's/ASD traits from already being genetically exposed. But I was taking effexor the first 4 weeks of my pregnancy before quitting this cold turkey. I failed to inform anyone until recently reading about the development of the neural tube that happens during that time. If there is a glitch in the development, this has been known to possibly cause Autism. My guess is this contributed to his ASD because I was only using the medication at the exact time the neural tube was developing.

No proven links in the medical world I am afraid - but that doesn't mean there is no increased risk. I have been on Effexor XR 75 mg for years before getting pregnant, then maintained same dosage in the first 6 weeks of pregnancy and then discontinued following rapid tapering by 10 weeks. Bear in mind that the drug takes time to filter out of the system. My daughter was born in 2005 without any issues at all (a perfect 10 apgar score) and met and exceeded all developmental milestones with no issues. Today she is a very healthy and bright 8 year old.

I too took Effexor during pregnancy, being assured by my Dr. it was perfectly safe. During my third tremester, I about had a heart attack when I picked up my bottle to take my dose and saw a sticker warning of taking the medication during pregnancy. I'm sure I sound like an id**t for not noticing earlier; truth is I blindly & naively followed my dr
without question, as if he were a god who knew all. My 7 year old son is extremely bright. Yes, he is also autistic.
I blame myself. It's a heavy, heavy burden. I feel your weight of worry and burden, OP. Love, blessings & relief to you.
