I was just wondering. I went through a disturbing, shocking experience and for about 3 days I took more of my alprazolam than prescribed. I went back to my usual dosage and I am having like withdrawal symptoms. Feeling numb, unable to concentrate, self-detached, unreality, feeling unable to accomplish tasks that I didn't even have to think about before. Is this normal and how long does it take to get to feeling normal again after going back to the normal dosage? Any information would be helpful.

Hi,
Even though alprazolam is known to cause addiction and over time you do develop tolerance to this medication, it’s somewhat hard to pin down the symptoms you are experiencing now just to possible withdrawal from the higher dosage of alprazolam. As you said yourself, the reason you had to take the bigger dose in the first place was shock and the symptoms such as inability to concentrate of feeling detached that last for several days after some traumatic event could be more related to shock, than to the medication itself.
So, continue to take your regular dosage, but I would definitely recommend you to consult your doctor if these symptoms last any longer. I doubt it’s the withdrawal, but you might need a treatment adjustment or addressing the new symptoms.
