I started to take Amiodarone last month. Before it I was on Nadolol, Azimilide and Digoxin. Amiodarone is used for many serious arrhythmias of the heart and finally I think that I’m much better. But you are right about side effects, they can be very serious. Sometimes they take weeks or months to develop.

Amiodarone is the most potent anti-arrhythmic drug that can control both your rhythm as well as your heart rate. Digoxin, on the other hand, can only control your heart rate.

Amiodarone, however, has a lot of serious side-effects, including pulmonary fibrosis, thyroid issues and liver functions. These side-effects will not happen immediately but will happen as time goes by. This is due to the fact that amiodarone accumulates in body tissue. As a result, you need to have periodic liver, thyroid and lung monitoring (X-ray).

You should continue to take amiodarone if you do not experience any side-effects. However, if side-effects develop, there is a new drug out there which is less efficacious than amiodarone, but with fewer side-effects.
