I work in medical transcription, night shift, putting in long hours and drinking lots of caffeine in order to keep typing until around 3:00 a.m. I subsequently had to drink wine to take the edge off to get to sleep. I wanted to break the cycle of caffeine/alcohol, had stopped drinking, and trazodone was recommended as a great way to “reset the sleep cycle.” I don’t normally take prescription drugs but decided to give it a try. I broke a 100 mg tablet in half somewhat unevenly, and ended up taking probably 60 mg at 3:30 a.m. on a full stomach. I began to feel drowsy and clumsy by 4:00 a.m. and went to bed, but lie awake thinking. I felt tired/groggy yet NOT relaxed – I had cramps in my neck and shoulders from typing which remained or even got worse, while my mind continued to race. I did NOT have the pleasant, warm, comforting feeling that one would expect from a sleep aid, a narcotic, a benzodiazepine or a muscle relaxant. Also, I had to get up to pee about every 10 minutes! I started to drift off around 5:00 a.m. but had to get up to pee several more times. I finally fell asleep around 5:30 a.m. I woke up at 1:30 p.m. with a terrible headache and barely able to drag my ass out of bed, hungover and not refreshed at all. I had to drink a very strong cup of coffee in order to function – thereby perpetuating the cycle I was trying to break! I will never take this drug again. By the way: Trazodone is considered “not habit forming” only because it is neither fun nor pleasant, and therefore nobody would willingly abuse it. However, like all antidepressants it IS physically addictive, meaning if you take it long enough you will build up tolerance and require an increased dose, and if you stop suddenly, you will have withdrawal symptoms, which in my opinion is totally not worth it for a drug that was never pleasant in the first place. Would not recommend this drug. :-(

I normally do not write on these boards but I need to let people know about Trazadone ...I was been on Trazadone for 5 years, 3 of those years suffered severe anemia and had to keep increasing my dose because it stopped working over time. I recently found out that the trazadone could be contributing to my anemia and weaned myself off in about 2 -3 weeks. It has been a nightmare, body shakes, tremors, muscles tighten during sleep and very restless mind. I would recommend NO one take this longer than needed, it is addicating no matter what your doctors says and very hard to come off of. A month later and I still have side effects!

:( .....I have been strugling with withdrawel from Benzos..for some time(2-yrs) My Md recently canceled my 4mg-of clonazepam per a day script.... cold turkey, then sent a letter to me, that he could not see me any longer...So had to start over with new MD tried to get same Rx again @ lower dose.. As side effect or-AKA syndrome of withdrawel for this med is horrific!! Now was given in mid-March Trazodone 50mg @ bedtime.. On first dose...I felt very drugged and wanted to go to bed. I did sleep for 1& half-hour on 2 X 50mg of -Trazodone. Then woke up with horrible nightmare & moderate headache, slight uncomfortable,( priapism) also(erection). I am 40-yr old white male,(non-smoker-fair to good health-rare alcohol user-no health problems other than mentioned) with yrs of chronic sleep problems and good degree of anxiety. I am trying to get bcak on the Clonazepam as I cannot seem to feel comfortabel around anyone ...But @ a low dose to get me at a better functioning level than without the Benzo-effect on mood, etc. I will not take the trazodone.dream/nightmare was one of the worst I have experienced.

I have bi-polar disorder and I take trazadone to help me sleep. It works great. From everything that I have researched, 50 mg is a min. dose for help sleeping. I know other people that take it also and it works well for them. The most important thing for me to say to everyone is DO NOT "PLAY" WITH YOUR MEDS! I mean take them as directed. A lot of people quit taking the meds once they start feeling better, but that is the worst thing you can do. You are feeling better because the meds are working..... keep taking them. Mental illness is no different than any other illness. If you were diabetic would you quit taking your insulin?

Due to a recent split from my significant other, a death in my family, and a very long work schedule, I was exhausted, depressed, and just generally felt overloaded. I made mountains out of mole hills and just overreacted to everything. My sleep was interrupted and sometimes I would work for days on just a few hours of rest. Not sleep, just rest. I am in the medical field so being alert and focused is a must. My Dr. said "Let's talk." I was prescribed Buspirone 5mg 3 times daily combined with Trazodone 50mg nitely. After 3 days the difference is nothing short of miraculous. I am seeing the world in a whole different light. If, in this short of a time, I have had such an improvement, I am curious to see what next wk. brings. I take no other meds., so this is new to me. The only side effects seem to be nausea from the Trazodone, due to the fact that I did not eat when taking the first dosage. Also, maybe just a little too mellow from the Buspirone, not complaining, though. I think that sense of "Whoopee" will level out with longer usage.

Last night I took trazadone for the first time. 50mg to start did nothing,.. I laid in bed for 2 hours and after the first 30 minutes and felt a little tense. After about 3 hours I took another 50mg and felt as though it took me at least another 90 minutes to sleep. I don't usually take sleep aids but have taken the over the counter ones in the past. I have taken valium and find that 5mg makes me really relaxed and 10 will put me down. I took trazadone to change my sleep pattern for the weekend for an upcoming 12 hour drive through the night. So far the first night was a flop, I had depressing dreams and feel groggy today. I wonder if this is a med that takes sometime for the body to get used to. My BF takes two different sleep aids plus alcohol for his sleep problem, surely I don't ever want his routine, he's up and down throughout the night to repeat drugs and alcohol, snores heavily, has some sleep apnia (sp) and is lathargic most of the day.

I don't usually post but we seem to all be in the same boat and I wanted to share my experience.
3 years ago I was having anxiety attacks in my sleep (adrenaline surges in the back of my head that actually hurt) that ended me in the hospital eventually due to dehydration. During the day I would be puking and pooping at least 8 times a day or more. At night I would go to bed exhausted at 9 and wake up at 12 am. Staying awake until 4 am. Then the nausea would set in and the torture began for another day.
It took 3 years to figure out it was insomnia throwing my body into the flight or fight response. In my case evacuating everything so I could fight. The insomnia occures the worst in December and March clueing me into lack of sunlight (SAD).
I now take 50mg of Trazadone 1 pill a night, lost 30 pounds and take a BComplex multi vitamin. I try to wean myself off of it during the summer. I've had the best nights sleep ever. I wake up feeling refreshed and capable of handling my day.
What I feel is relief. Relief in knowing that I can do it again tonight and tomorrow night. Relief in knowing I won't wake up at 1 am and my brain won't be a hamster in a cage, constantly thinking over the same thoughts with no sollution presenting itself.
The only recent side affect I've had is I got up in the morning too quickly and fainted. I dialed back my dose to 1/2 a pill and I'm still getting the great results. I also drink a lot of water to make sure the trazadone is getting out of my system.

Hi all,
I was given this sleep aid three months ago. I tried it three times but gave up because it didn't help. I just scanned all the replies on this site and now realize it must take a few days to work. I have 50MG pills. I am worried about getting hooked on it from what I just read. I am in the worst finincial battle of my life and wake up with too much thinking about the what ifs. I am 77

I have taken Traodone 150mg for five years now and I did not get any of the effects that you are getting.
If you are getting to many side effects by the first month, then you should talk to you Dr. about getting on something else.
Do you not know that within 30 days your body will tell you if a drug works or not? If you don't, then you need to talk to your Dr. more or go back to school.
I stopped taking Trazodone 1 month ago, at my request, because I was building up a tolerance against it, and I was worried about my health after reading all your notes, (that was a bad idea), I was put on Temazepam 30mg.
The Temazepam I was given was 15mg. On my best night, i got, two hours of sleep. I started to double the douse and that helped a little, I got 3 to 3.5 hours of sleep. I told my Dr. that I needed to double the douse, because it was not working as well as we thought. Also I thought that I should start taking Trazodone againg, but only take 50mg, with the combination of Temazepam. This has worked well for me, and now I get 4 to 5 hours of sleep.
I have never been a real sleeper, even when I was a child.
You people that get 6 or 7 hours of sleep, good for you.
I have been living like this for 20 years, raising three children that are about to go to college and holding down a full time job, this on a hole 4 hours of sleep a night. Oh and by the way I have been married for 23 years to the same man. My one and only mariage.
If you truly need help, I am here for you.

I haven't heard anyone mention headaches. I have been taking Trazodone for 10 years and it has been a blessing at times. It is definitely addititve. I've tried to get off of trazodone many time without much success. I believe that Trazodone is the reason why I wake up with terrible migranes in the morning. I lowered the dose from 150mg to now 50mg. I'm still waking up with the terrible migranes like twice a week. I'm going to try 25 mg for a month, then cut that in half for about a month. My doctor said to try to use some over the counter sleep medicine like Unisome to ease me off Trazodone. As I'm going down in dose, I'm noticing I'm dreaming more, waking more, and my dreams are quite weird.

I have been taking trazodone (100mg) for about 4 years for sleep. I absolutely recommend it. I have no side effects with it and don't suffer from a "hangover" when using it. This stuff is great.
