I was put on the IUD merina after my first pregnancy and birth. Pre-pregnancy I weighed 145/150 at 5'3". At 9 months pregnant I weighed 180, in the days after giving birth I weighed 160. I gave birth in April and by August I weighed 205 and could not stop eating. I constantly felt hunger pains. Not to mention I also constantly had a yeast infection! After a year or so I had the IUD removed and was just using condoms, during which a hard time in my life left me eating very little I lost 45 pounds, leaving me back at 160. Then I started getting the IUD shot, the first few months didn't involve any weight gain, but little by little I started gaining weight. At first I wanted to blame it on the "college freshman 15 pounds" but I soon got back up to 190, 200 during bad weeks. I've been trying to lose weight but it just seems impossible as I always have an appitite and often struggle with depression because of my weigh, making me eat for comfort. Right now, I am under the impression that the only birth control that will not make you gain weight is non-hormonal birth control, but besides condoms none of them feel right for me. And condoms are inconvenient.

I know this is an old post, but you do not have to have been pregnant to get an IUD. I have had one and never been pregnant and have a friend with one who also never been pregnant.

not true at all! there are definitely meds that can make you gain 100 lbs or more. I gained 75 lbs on a med and couldnt lose it until I went off it and the weight just fell off.

I have been taking Lutera for 5 months now and only within the last two weeks have I been able to lose the 30 lbs I initially gained. I think my body adjusted to the hormones finally and is letting me lose some of that weight. I have lost 10 Lynn's already without really changing anything.

I am very active and can be a really strict eater (barely eat any processed food so I do not lack willpower thank you very much) but the times I've tried to take the pill I am astounded at how difficult it is to maintain my weight on it!  Takes like, 90 minutes of exercise A DAY in addition to strict eating habits. I won't lie, though my appetite goes through the freaking roof when I'm on it.  Only way to compensate is by sticking to veggies and occasional bits of lean protein--yet I usually still gain.  This is kind of weight struggle is indicitave of a hormonal imbalance and its happened on every form or hormonal bc I've tried.  My dr even admitted at one point that "well, I mean I don't think you're gonna be able to take the pill without gaining at least SOME weight."  I was like WTF haven't you been telling me this whole time that it's not going to make me gain weight?

I suspect for some of us (if not all of us) there is no hormonal birth control that won't make us eventually gain weight. I say eventually bc i think it happens very gradually for some. Of course age will do that too, but I will tell you one thing I've never been able to handle hormonal bc for longer than 3 months so Ive not been on it for most of my life (i am almost 30) and I can see that I've been far more successful than all my other friends (who are on bc) at maintaining my weight over the years...

In fact, I was just looking at old pictures of my slightly older sister and marveling at how much she used to look like me....this will sound terrible but basically.. she was pretty skinny and attractive, but then her senior yr in high school she went on bc and BAM gained 20-30 lbs in like 3 months despite the fact that she had always been vegetarian and the same size! Looked like a completely different person! 10 yrs later she's still on bc (never went off), still vegetarian in addition to being regularly physically active (she is a jogger and swimmer)--yet she is still carrying an extra 30+lbs!

When one takes any form of hormonal birth control (ring, patch, IUD, pills, mini pills etc) they are pumping their body full of artificial hormones and this is bound to cause side effects--one of the obvious ones being weight gain. Why people can't see this is beyond me.

I think doctors feel they can say that it doesn't cause weight gain because for one thing, they don't care as long as they keep you from getting pregnant, and for another weight gain is not exactly a DIRECT effect, you know?   By this I mean that for a lot of women, the pill/patch/IUD/ring will cause hormonal imbalance (our levels of hormones all differ after all) and some of the unfortunate side effects of hormonal imbalance include increased appetite, weight gain, fatigue, depression, slower metabolism (when you mess with your hormones it can affect your metabolism in a big way), and all of these things can lead to weight gain and on top of that, they can even prevent a person from losing it no matter how hard they try. This is actually acknowledged by drs and some of them blame it on "insulin resistance," in which case they can say oh well that wasn't the pill; that was cause you are insulin resistant.

Some people-even the users themselves--blame it on plain lazyness or unhealthy eating habits but the thing is, the pill can increase your appetite (exponentially for some) as well as fatigue.  On top of this, the increase in estrogen will cause your body to change composition and hoard fat (cellulite, saddle bags, muffin top); it can eventually cause a person to become estrogen dominant which just makes you fat and unable to lose weight over time. This doesn't happen right away but there's a good chance it will eventually.

Although most sites you go on will say that birth control doesn't cause you to gain weight, I can tell you from experience I tried the depo-privera shot and it will pack on the pounds. Scientific study showed that most women who tried Depo gained as much as 11 pounds. I don't work out every day, but I exercise enough not to be gaining as much weight as I've gained. I was around 158lb. when I started the shot, and now I'm at 187 pounds. You tell me what it means. I happen to like the birth control patch. It's all trial and error. I recommend you just do the research yourself, and talk with your doctor about your options.

They can make you gain weight but not fast enough to really notice. A lot of the side effects are so gradual that you don't notice until you've had it for awhile. You can also get one if you have never had a kid. I don't have kids. It just depends on the doctor. I am seriously thinking of getting mine out 2 years early because of the weight gain, pain after sex, headaches, depression, and almost complete loss of interest in sex. Those are only a fraction of the problems that an IUD can cause though. I would highly recommend doing your research before you decide to get one.
