In some places the attending ER will not even schedule a surgery for a broken jaw without any insurance. He needs to be sure to keep his mouth a clean as possible until he can get attention. He needs to find attention asap because the jaw starts to heal one week after the initial break. Waiting longer than that could possibly cause further complications such as infection and or having to have it reset. He has to stay hydrated as much as possible, as i can guess he cant eat anything.

I am quite sure you can as the plates will always be there they advice you not to smoke for the first 2 weeks so it doesnt cause a infection and they also advice it so it doesnt slow down the healing process, a few joints wont hurt i smoke a maximum of 1 a day and im into my second week of recovery, 1 question how did u no when your stitches dissolved?

Same thing happened to me. This was in 2009. My jaw is still not quite right. It swells at times and I can just barely open my mouth. I don't know what to do. I can't afford my jaw to be broken again because o refuse to take pain killedss. I broke that promise the first time it happens and was totally on a different planet for two months. Ice brings the swelling down.

Its so crazy to read these two situations because I am going through the SAME EXACT THING! I was playin baseball and me and my friend collided. I broke my lower right jawbone in half and about a half inch away from my lower left chin area i had a fracture. I cant feel a sliver of the right side of my lip down to the bottom of my chin. I get my wires off this friday but my doc said he might have to rebreak my jaw because the bone might have healed wrong. I am just PRAYING that I dont have to stay wired any longer. I realize this is a very old discussion but I know how you guys felt! And I feel comforted that I now know for sure two guys had the same problems as me!

Hey everyone,

I was assaulted exactly 1 week ago and had my jaw broken on my right side in 1 location.  Apparently it is rare to have it only broken in one spot.  I have the same facial numbness you all have described near my chin and lower lip on the right side.  Hoping the feeling comes back! on the x-ray you can see that the break makes contact with the nerve so hopefully nothing is permanent. The oral surgeon I saw said it was not necessary to have surgery or have my jaw wired shut.  I just have to eat soft/liquid foods for the next 3-4+ weeks unfortunately. Is there anyone in here who has had a similar situation as us and is completely recovered?

Two weeks ago I broken my upper jaw near my ear (condylar neck fracture). The x ray showed a single break with a little displacement.  The doctor told me I would not need to be wired or have surgery because my teeth were still in line. Unfortunately its 2 weeks later and my jaw is still swollen and I've also noticed in the past few days that my bite is off. My back teeth on the side of the break are now touching early resulting in an open bite on the opposite side. I called the doc today and his assistant said "that doesn't sound right" and moved my follow up visit to Monday. I'm praying this isn't serious and can be fixed with rehab.

The dr on call for the oral and malofacial surgery has a legal obligation to see him after his hospital visit, the same thing happened to my son, but someone told me that they have to treat legally. Call the emergency room and find out who was on call that day and call them, if they say they won't see you, tell them your understanding is that the dr is legally responsible to see you, call a patient advocate at the hospital you were at, call the attorney general, go back to the emergancy room.

I was in car wreck and my jaw was broken in 5 places and lost most of my bottom teeth. That was in October and my lip and chin are still very numb. Please tell me you are getting some feeling back, because like you I don't think I can live the rest of my life like this. Please reply

I broke my jaw over a year ago in a scooter accident. My jaw broke from the middle and the left side of my lower teeth turned inside my mouth also my jaw broke on both sides in tiny pieces. I got surgery immediately that lasted for 8 hours and have now one metal plate in the center of my jaw and two other ones on my left side. My mouth was wired shut for a month, after they removed the wiring i couldn't open my mouth anymore and it took about 2 more months just to be able to eat rice and that sort of soft foods again. The recovery has been very grueling it took me just the first six months to be able to open my mouth enough to eat a sandwich. What really helped me the most with my recovery was my custom made splint for my upper teeth that my dentist asked me to wear every night. It helps the jaw to be more relaxed and be in less pain. Also i have been seeing a chiropractor who treats my jaw with different exercises. After the surgery doctors haven't been helpful at all! There's no quick fix for the recovery and it's very likely i'll never be 100% You're going to have some good and bad days just try to stay positive and remember it might take long time to feel normal.
