You know, I think a common factor in about 90% of these cases of the mud brown bloody discharge or just straight up brown blood is that we are all doing something to stop our periods. If ya think about it, taking birthcontrol basically tells your body, okay I'm pregnant so no need to release anymore eggs and blocks whatever hormones make a pregnancy viable blah blah blah. So if you release the odd egg now and again its gonna take a hell of a lot longer for the body to get rid of it (minus gravity's part) since your body wasn't expecting it to happen in the first place (same with underweight women, and no, a BMI of over 20 can still be underweight if its all muscle no fat, gotta have fat to make a baby, gotta have fat to bleed).

And it doesn't just have to be birthcontrol, I got the stomache flu, and since I couldn't keep anything down (and was underweight already) I lost my period for about 2 months. Getting it back slowly means my body had to go "oh okay I can sustain a pregnancy again" before I will get a normal one. Hopefully it wont mess up my usual period days because I used to be right on the money, 30 days in between no give or take at all. Although right now I've been spotting muddy brown blood randomly throughout the last month (I actually freaked when I wiped once thinking it was c**p!)

So moral of the story. If you aren't in icredible pain, there arent big pieces of fleshy bits in your blood (Bigger chunks than what you usually pass can indicated a miscarriage) and you arent soaking more than one maxi period pad in a few hours don't worry about it too much. When we mess with our bodies in ways it doesn't like with chemicals or poor nutrition, it messes back..  If you ARE having the above mentioned pains, chunks, excessive blood loss (especially the last one!) Go see a doctor immediately, a hospital if needed!

I started getting that too! It makes down there itchy and somewhat sore.

What happened to me was, I was taking birthcontrol last month, and I have been for a while, but I missed four or five and started before I got to my green and blue pills (I take Kariva). So I read the paper that came with it and it said to start my pills at a certain time during my period or something like that. Anyway, I'm 9 white pills in and I'm still having this issue. It's killing me!!

Ashlee, many women have a discharge, usually pink or brown while pregnant. It does not mean you miscarried by any means.

Thank you! I have been wondering and worrying about the change in discharge for a while. So after about three months it should go away. Along with the nausea and other side effects?

I would really appreciate it if the people who wrote on here years ago and were dealing with "brown ugly discharge/spotting a few days after unprotected sex while on bc.... missed a night, took it in the morning situation" could answer if they were or were not pregnant because every time I google this questions it comes up with "implantation spotting" and freaks me out. I have 2 and a half weeks till my scheduled period and im on loestrin-fe.. I need to know if I should take action now or if i'm fine and not to freak out.  I don't think i will be sane waiting for the right time to pee on a stick.  :'(

Missing days and then taking two in one day to make up for it will cause that brown discharge. this is spotting. it is brown because it is just old blood.

I am 20, on birth control for the fact that when i wasnt on it, i was getting my period every 2-11months, never once got pregnant, yet barely ever used a condom, im clean too and well im on the generic version of Loestrin 24 Fe, which is microgestin 1/20 Fe and ive been on it for about a year now next month and i do sometimes skip a pill and take two the next day, but for the past 5months, i have been experiencing a brownish discharge instead of bleeding. my gyno said it was all normal.. sometimes about a week after my period, i get the brownish discharge again, but tonight i played with myself, cause well, who am i gonna have sex with, and i ended up with a brownish discharge, but a mucus like dark brownish clot.. there were smaller clots too, but it was weird.. like maybe my vagina hates me or something.. im hoping it goes away by the time i have sex maybe sometime next week or the week after, but in march ill be seeing my gyno and hopefully she can give me some answers.. any ideas guys? because i know for a fact i am not pregnant.. after 4yrs of unprotected  sex, and guys cumming in me and me pushing it out and about 13 prego tests later, all negative.. So i hope i get an answer soon or that it goes away or turns out to be normal..

See, I have the " implant" & I have never had BROWN discharge,
Now, for the past two months, all I get is brown discharge. & somedays, nothing, somedays just a little. & somedays, there's ALOT ! I don't get it ! & obviously... I'm gonna smell it, & make sure I'm not " dirty " & I, I smell FRESH & CLEAN !! So I don't get it... I've been ignoring it. But TWO months is long enough, & I'm gonna go back to the gyn, & find out wtf is up lol . Ugh.
- sorry for all of you who have to put up with brown discharge.

I have had the same problem. I've been on the pill since 2006 - it's now 2013 - and for the past 2 or 3 years, I've had almost constant brown/mucus-y/sometimes bloody discharge. To the point where I would only go 2 or 3 days a month without SOMETHING coming out of my vag. It does NOT mean you're pregnant. But, it IS really annoying a huge mood killer. I'm super self-conscious about it, but telling my boyfriend about it and being vulnerable with him brought us closer. So, it's not all bad :) I've gone to the doctor about it a million times, and the only explanation I get is that my body doesn't make enough estrogen. My doctor tells me that because I'm thin, I don't have a lot of fat cells, and estrogen is formed in fat cells.  Not enough estrogen causes your body to spot. I went off the pill for 2 months and had no spotting or brown discharge at all - it was wonderful. However, my period came unexpectedly (being on the pill is wonderful since you know when your period is coming), aaaaand my boobs got smaller. And, my boyfriend had to wear a condom, which is super annoying. Sex is just better without a condom, let's face it, which is one of the main reasons I'm on the pill.

My doctor had me try three different pills with higher estrogen doses to combat the discharge/spotting, but to no avail. I'm trying to get an IUD next week to see if that finally ends this nightmare. I'll post again to tell you all if it helps!
