I am now scheduled for surgery on November 29th. I have a list of 15 or so questions for my doctor when I see him. I am not looking forward to this but things really flared up a couple of days ago (same day they called to give me my surgery date) and if I had any doubts about having to do this, they are gone.

I am glad to see some more positive stories on this site and I thank you for sharing yours.

Surgery has been moved to Dec 6th now. Not happy about it but I am sure that the slot was taken by someone who needed it more than I. At least, it gives me more time to get ready for Xmas.

My doc freaked me out worse than anything else.  He told me they rarely remove them anymore because the pain is so bad.  I had internal (3) and external (many) hemmorroidectomy.  Due to diverticulitis made worse by c. diff.  They did it in conjunction with a sigmoid colon resection, so it was done under anesthesia and I was given good drugs, in hospital for week.  I had to take the narcotics still when I got home, for about three more weeks, only at night at the end.  This was worse than c section and hysterectomy!

But, I am soooo happy I did it.  It's been four weeks and I'm really starting to feel better.

PLEASE TAKE THIS ADVICE.  I WISH I HAD THESE THINGS READY FOR WHEN I GOT HOME, BUT JUST RESEARCHED AND PURCHASED A WEEK AGO.  Already ordered some for my sister who suffered.

Go to Amazon and order products called Squatty Potty ($35, their website explains the science) and also Luxe Bidet (about $40)  These products make bowel movements painless, I am not kidding.  The bidet is so soothing.  Installed to existing toilet water supply in less than 1/2 hour.  And once you find the right position on the squatty, it just flows naturally.  Very helpful when you start bulking up.

I am kicking myself that $75 has made such a difference.. I wish I had used these products for years, I would maybe have my health.  And they are both things used everywhere in the world but the US.

Just started the second day of my hemorrhoid surgery recovery. I had one very large external/internal hemorrhoid removed by incision and cauterization of the veins. I had been waiting in fear for the post surgery pain and my first bowel movement so I took the pain meds as prescribed. But I decided to stop taking them last night. About an hour ago I had my first vowel movement with absolutely no pain. A half hour later I went again - still no pain. Don't know why my recovery seems so easy or if it will get worse but I took the stool softeners, the fiber supplement, drank tons of fluids and ate soup and fiber rich goods. Don't let the posts scare you. Everybody's body and surgery is different.

Good luck today!!!! Only on day 2 but my recovery has been nothing like most of the posts. Just follow Dr. Instructions. Take stool softeners, fiber supplements, lots of water/cranberry juice, soup and soft high fiber foods. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the good luck but unbelievably, my surgery got delayed again. Apparently, someone had a hernia larger than the doctor thought and it ended up taking a lot longer than they had scheduled. My doctor said he could try to get it done but it would be a rush. I rather rebook and have it done at a leisurely pace. So I need to call the doctor's office on Monday and see when I can get in next. The holidays are coming up soon so I don't want it done too close to Xmas. If I can't get in early next week, we might have to wait for early January. Oh well… things happen!

Kevin, just wanted to say thank you for your positive story on hemmoroid surgery! I see your post was over a year ago and hope you are still healthy in the rectal area! I too had surgery October 1st 2014. 2 prolapsed, thrombosis internal hemmoroidectomy removed. Like you I was terrified of the surgery and pain it would cause. I suffered for 20 years with the ailment. Mine were caused mainly by childbirth and then lack of proper diet and health care. I had to push my hemmeroids back in after every bowel movement also causing more trauma back there for so many years due to fear of getting it taken care of. I'm also happy to say I did it now. Yes it was very painful and yes the fear and anxiety of the first bowel movement afterward caused me some problems but I managed it. I d like to say to others contemplating the surgery to listen to Kevin and take it from another patient who surrvived the experience to understand how wonderfully life changing it will be. You must change change your lifestyle and diet afterward which is also a wonderful change. Don't research the horror stories of negativity! Research a healthy diet and foods that heal so you are prepared after the surgery to help in your recovery. I am almost 6 weeks out now. There is still some pain with bowel movements and a little blood when I go. You can make your bowel movements how you want them with your diet and healthy life style! It's a forever change and it cleaned up my life physically mentally and spiritually! I've learned so much throughout my recovery so far and would be willing to help any one who has questions! If your doctor says it's necessary to do the surgery just do it! You are strong and capable! You will be happy you went through it and it will make you stronger in long the run! Thank you again Kevin! Positive energy is the key! Water, fiber and healing foods like fruits and veggies and beans! Check out "prevention magazine" for clean eating advice! Best wishes and love to all! Kathy

I didn't read anything on-line til after the surgery. Though not fun, on day 5, I do seem to be getting better. Actually stopped the pain meds after the first night (hated the way the made mere feel) and managing with minimal Tylenol and Advil. By reading your post, it almost my experience to a T. Looking forward to getting on with life.

I came across your entry the night before my surgery and very glad I read more positive entries before I got to the horror stories! I second you on eating very light...it's very helpful, I think; I got my 'roids removed 8/15/17 and on week three now.

I thought it sounded crazy when I read your dr said to take stool softeners like candy...until I had my battle with Norco stopping me up and having the first BM a bit too hard. The directions on the stool softener bottle from my surgeon said two...that obviously didn't help and I called up and the nurse said up to four. I needed a little more than that!

BUT, as I am not a big person, my fervor in taking extra Colace made me have borderline runs, and so now having to stick to a bland diet at least til second 10 day follow-up. I didn't space apart food, Norco, fiber supplement, and stool softener enough I don't think and just messed up my tummy. :-(

I did strain a little each time, much as I have tried not to -- sitting in the sitz bath helps move things along inside and relaxing...even pooping in it is A LOT less painful during and after. Patience is key! Ice after the sitz bath is helpful, too.

Other than that, I concur with you: it's not all that bad! Just be prepared with extra gauze pads, baby wipes, food. I think if one can accept that intense pain will be part of the package, that's half the battle. My surgeon is an osteopathic colorectal & rectal surgeon who stresses frequent sitz baths above all. She would not let me use any creams or ointments because she believes in letting the wounds breathe and healing naturally, which has been a challenge at times. Or any muscle relaxer or other drug to relax you, which is what some have said they use.

It's ok...I had a hard enough time with narcotic pain killers over the years, a necessary "evil" to my mind! Thank you for sharing your experience kparker76271163

I am sorry to hear you had to endure two rounds of surgery~I hope mine will be once and forever! Mine were BAD, endured for 20+ yrs and twice mentioned by my colorectal surgeon as Top 10 Worst Ever!
