I was given this drug in the 90's and it is very difficult to wean off. Sudden death has been associated with the sudden stoppage of it. It is almost impossible to wean without experiencing a gutting withdrawal. Do it with your doctor and start by decreasing the dosage by only a few mgs for at least a week. Then decrease a few more mgs. It can take weeks with some nasty effects to get off. They really didn't know the withdrawal problems when it was prescribed for me. Now, I don't take anything which hasn't been on the market for at least five years.

I was only on it for 6 months but the anxiety and irritability I feel after quitting is unbearable. This drug is terrible.

I have been on Effexor XR for 12 years now (150 mg daily). Tried to taper off once - couldn't deal with the withdrawal symptoms so went back on it. Trying again now by removing one bead at a time (remove one bead per week). Only on day two and feeling tired and irritable (this is only removing one bead!). When I'm on the full dosage, I do feel fine, great even. But I would like to have a life back where I'm not using a crutch to get by. If I knew back then how bad the withdrawal would be, I wouldn't have started. Family doctor prescribed it - she surely didn't know either. You are not alone.

I quit cold turkey hardest thing I ever did! What bothers me is i am so nervous and have horrible anxiety now this really hurts my life! I even !and weird twitches now! What do we do???

Although I am 84 - I taught art for 20 years. I completed many paintings and had .my winter paintings printed & sent them as Christmas cards. Effexor dosage was elevated to 187.5 mg and my doctors do not realize that the damage due to weaning off effexor 187.5 mg in 4 weeks is too soon after taking this drug for 1 year. I am desperately trying to get back to normal . My medical professionals do.not understand that this drug is ruining what is left of my life
I can't read - my vision is poor nor write anything even my signature is poor. My motor skills no longer exist and I sweat constantly.. I want to find an MD or psychiatrist who recognizes this problem. I want to enjoy what is left of my life.

i quit all at once too. I have severe muscle weakness even almost 2 months later, loss of taste, inability to sleep more than a few hours at a time. The muscle weakness is really taking a toll. its even hard to preform my work.

I was on efecor 26 years. Since finally coming off i am very emotionally labile cry at the drop ofva hat. Not have depression. Can be teary telling a joke watching something on tv, hearing good news. Been off the drug 6 months. Imnsure the drug did damage to my neurotransmitters receptors whatever. Always emotional . People think have ptsd. I have no.mental issues nn ok t depress e d just cry f oir no reason. Since com okkng off it. It iscembarrassing. Trying not to gobbackon. It I took.me 12 months to come off it andv3 attempts after 26 years on it. Drs just say stay on it not harming you.

Wonder how you are doing now? I took Effexor for approximately 20 years. Now off it and it has been a roller coaster. It has only been 6 weeks. Had a few moments of feeling ok so was hopeful but the more I read these posts the more concerned it get. I'm wondering since it is now 2024 if you are better yet?
