I have had two caudal epidural steroid injections within the past 6 weeks for treatment of sciatica that was incurring due to swelling from disc herniations. The shots have been a blessing! They have changed my life. However, I started my period as usual when i received the 2 nd injection. This was 2 weeks ago and I am still having a heavy period with more intense than usual cramping. This thread made me feel so much better! I firmly believe that the injection has caused this interruption in my mensturation. i would choose to receive it again though! My sciatica is gone. As a 36 year old busy mother of 3, a period from Hell is far more manageable than sciatica

I have had two spinal epidurals in the past three and half weeks for a protruding L5 disc. My period was about a week and a half late and when it started it WILL NOT STOP! I've been bleeding now going on 11 days with no sign of stopping. This is not usual for me....I'm usually pretty regular. I'm a 50 year old woman showing signs of pereomenopause. I'm wondering if I should contact my gynecologist. Is this something I need to be concerned about or should I wait for it to eventually stop on it's own (assuming it will stop)

WOW!!! I am so glad I found this post. I had been getting steriod shots for my alopecia that contained kenalog. I have been on my period for almost a month. It switches from light to heavy. It's the worst thing ever and no one ever told to hey this could be a side effect so I was going crazy. I had been keeping track of this meticulously and spoke with my sister who is a doctor who found that when I began with the shots my period became irregular. I thought I was dying. I want to continue with the shots because they work. Should I go on birth control?

I had cortisone shots in each hip in early August 2014 when I was at the end of my period. I kept bleeding lightly for weeks...almost a month afterwards. This month (Sept) I started late (but really only a couple weeks after it stopped from last month) and have been bleeding for 2 weeks with no end in sight.
I wasn't told this was a complication either but I would do it again, it helped tremendously. I am just hoping it goes back to some sort of a regular schedule/duration soon.......

did you take any birth control pills to try to stop your period? If not how many days did your period stay on before going off.

I am also 48 and my story is almost exaclty like yours...i too have had a series of epidural injections when i started a year ago right after the first 2 injections i skipped a month....then it regulated itself again. recently i have had another series and once again i am waiting patient for my cycle to start up again...it almost 60 days now. I have been getting terrible hot flashes as well....and i also believe that the injections have jump started my menopause inot full gear. I also spoke with my doctor who said its just coincedence....i am finding that hard to believe.....that all of us are having the same side effects but no one will substantiate our claims. Well it's nice to know i am not alone.

Hey everyone! So, in May, I was diagnosed with a herniated disk in my Lumbar region. I am 20 years old. Until then, my periods were normal, however, once I started receiving the injections in my spine, my periods have stopped completely. Do your periods resume after the spinal injections are complete? This is very abnormal for me becasue I take birth control and my period is always on time and there is no possible way that I could be pregnant. I'm just wondering if this is something I should bring up to my doctor because this is worrying me a little bit.

It's much easier for them to attribute everything to menopause since they don't want to bother investigating other causes and treatments. I only hope that the damage from steroid shots are reversable and that our cycles will return back to normal.
