Is it possible to induce a menstrual period early in order to avoid menstruation during an inconvenient time, such as a vacation, wedding, or swimming competition? One SteadyHealth member asked just this question:
“HELP! How can I get my first period to come overnight or as soon as possible? I am going on vacation tomorrow and I need it to happen before then! Someone please reply before then! PLEASE!”
Others join her in asking the same question, and discuss methods to induce menstruation. Proposed techniques include parsley and drinking milk or soy milk. There are also questions from young girls who have not yet reached menarche, and who want to know when they’ll get their first period and if there’s anything they can do to make it come faster.
Are there any ways to make your period come faster?

Birth control pills (oral contraceptives) primarily serve to prevent pregnancy, but they also have some secondary benefits. These include banishing painful menstruation, clearing up hormone-related acne, treating PMS symptoms, and regulating the menstrual cycle. Birth control pills will be the safest and most accessible means of influencing the timing of menstruation for most women.
- Women who are using birth control pills that contain seven placebo pills per cycle can simply skip the inactive pills and continue with a new package in order to skip a “period” — which is really a withdrawal period rather than a real menstruation.
- Those who use monophasic birth control pills can instead simply continue with the next package instead of taking the seven-day break.
Using the pill to delay menstruation is generally safe, and women who aren’t yet on the pill but who want to avoid menstruation during a particular period of time can ask their doctor about it. Do be aware that many new pill users experience “breakthrough bleeding”, or spotting during unpredictable times — so if you’re new to the pill, there is no guarantee you will not experience this.
In addition, the medication norethisterone — a progestin that is used as an ingredient in many birth control pills — can also be used to delay a period.
Natural substances said to be emmenagogues — that is, substances with the potential to bring on a period — include parsley and pineapple, as well as Pennyroyal, Tansy leaves, black cohosh, Angelica leaves and even megadoses of vitamin C. Soy milk, which contains some estrogens, is also sometimes said to have the ability to bring on a period. Some people also suggest that using a warm bath can induce a period, likely because warm baths can help you relax and stress can sometimes delay periods. In addition, salt may be said to induce uterine contractions and therefore help speed up menstruation.
As for menarche, the onset of menstruation (that is, your first-ever period), scientific data indicates that its timing is influenced by multiple factors. One you’ll certainly have heard of is genetics — the age at which your female relatives had their first periods goes a long way toward predicting when you will have yours. In addition, research suggests that girls with higher percentages of body fat are more likely to have their first periods sooner, and the same is true for those who eat more meat. Girls with very high levels of physical activity are, on the other hand, likely to get their first period later. Environmental factors — where you live, what kinds of chemicals you are exposed to — also influence the timing of your first period.
Using herbal remedies will not, however, make you get your first period. Most girls have their first period around two years after their breasts start developing, and you can generally expect your period somewhere between age 12 and 14. If you are 15 and have not yet had a period, see an OBGYN about it — do not try to induce your first period with unsafe and unproven methods!

What advice did women who wanted to get their period as soon as possible receive?
- Patience you may want your period to start but the novelty will soon wear off after your third of fourth one.
- I wouldn't recommend putting anything inside you if you have not done this before, as it may be painful for you and certainly wont induce menstruation.
- For in the future, you can put parsley in your vagina but tie it to a string so you can pull it out, a little bit like a tampon.
- No inserting Parsley or any herb, creme item into your vagina does not start a period, any blood you MAY see would be because you cut yourself putting silly things inside a place they are not suppozed to go
- Well this is how but i am.late drink milk.a ton haha and take a bath with your legs open and you have to put bath salt in it it will come in a few days or that day
Many women cautioned against the use of potentially home remedies to induce menstruation:
- You can't make your period come anytime before it wants to, I'm sure over the 1000s of years women have tried all sorts to make it arrive and to try to delay it, but the fact is your period is controlled by the release of specific hormones and other factors going on inside your body.
- Sorry girls don't believe everything you read on the Internet.
- I think Young ladies get a reality check your period will come whe it is ready to cum you cant sit on a toilet and push it out, nor can you lite a candle and dance the fandango singing 'I want my period goddess of periods' nor will any amount of browser c+p effect the timing your body decides to let it all go Im just shocked some of you are so gullable;-|
- No inserting Parsley or any herb, creme item into your vagina does not start a period, any blood you MAY see would be because you cut yourself putting silly things inside a place they are not suppozed to go
- Don't do that u could get an infection
In conclusion
Many women will want to influence the timing of their menstrual period by delaying or inducing it at one point or another. Birth control pills are the safest and most accessible way to do this, while home remedies that involve inserting herbs or salt into the vagina are both unproven and potentially very harmful. Do not do this, regardless of what lay people may advise you.
Girls who are still waiting for their first period should consult a doctor if they are worried, rather than trying home remedies to make it come.
