I’m a type 2 diabetic and I try really hard to look after myself now. I’m in my 40’s and was over weight, smoked, did no exercise, drank loads – you name it I was really, really bad, but now I’ve lost over 2 stone and I swim, I jog and do circuits every week. I’m really good at going to the nurse to get my blood checked but I only get my HbA1c see done every 6 months or so and I’d really like to know what’s going on, on a more regular basis. I know my GP won’t do it so I wondered if anyone knew where I can get it done more often? Cheers

You know, I must say what really struck me about your post is that you’ve really taken on board how important it is to consider all aspects of lifestyle in diabetes and it sounds like it’s really made a difference to how you look on things. We all have bad habits, but most of the time we just don’t recognise them – but you seem to have made so many changes. Well done you!
The other thing is that you really get that keeping you BG in control is fundamental to staying in control of your diabetes, and I think that says millions. The fact that you’ve managed to lose weight and exercise is brilliant.
In answer to the question, you can easily buy a meter to measure your HbA1c on the internet or in a pharmacy, it’ll do your BG as well if you need. Also, over recent years some supermarkets have offered the service for free but not consistently. Your GP will offer a 6 month service which is perfectly adequate, but if you want more than that ,that’s the route you’re gonna have to go. Good luck and well done again.
