Hi, folks. My uncle has been diagnosed with cancer and he is in the hospital. I think that he is recommended to use dactynomycin, but I have heard that it can cause leucopenia. I would like to find out something more about this drug. Is this true? What to do with this? I hope someone will answer my post.

Hi, there. Dactynomycin is a trade name for actinomycin. It is an antibiotic isolated from bacteria. It is discovered by accident to have anti cancer characteristic. However, it has side effects like many of those types of drugs. Leucopenia means low number of white blood cells. These cells are very important in the immune system. When one has leucopenia, there is higher tendency towards infections. That is why one must be cautious. Regular analyses of the blood must be made. However, I think that dactynomycin is an older chemotherapeutic drug. You should check this with an expert.
