My son has a Wilms tumor, he is ten years old. It occurred on the left kidney and after the latest examination; it is a lot bigger so beside chirurgical treatment, doctor recommended use of actinomycin D. Can you tell me something about this medication? Will it help my child? What about side effects?

Quite often, combination off chirurgical treatment and Actinomycin therapy is used in dealing with cancer. Actinomycin connects itself to DNA and in that way stops all processes of cell multiplying (lowers the levels of enzymes that are used in that process). So, that medication will prevent the occurrence of new tumor cells, while the surgery will deal with already existing tumor cells. As for side effects, most common is bone marrow depression.
