My brother is one emotionally unstable person with history of drug dependence. Also he used to take an enormous dose of alcohol too. His doctor told me he should take Ritalin for his disorder. He explained that such patients may increase dosage on their own initiative. As he will definitely use this drug, I would like to know something more about side effects of Ritalin.

The most common side effects of Ritalin are nervousness and insomnia. They are usually controlled by reducing dosage and omitting the drug in the afternoon or evening. Some other side effects include hypersensitivity, which means there are skin rashes, urticaria, fever, arthralgia, exfolitative dermatitis, erythema multiforme etc. There were also reports of anorexia, nausea, dizziness, palpitations, headache, dyskinesia and drowsiness. Toxic psychosis has been reported too, such as blood pressure and pulse changes. Although definite causal relationship has not been established, the following have been reported in patients taking Ritalin. There were instances of abnormal liver function, ranging from transaminase elevation to hepatic coma. Then isolated cases of cerebral arteries and occlusion, leucopenia or anemia, transient depressed mood…. In children possible is loss of appetite, abdominal pain, weight loss during prolonged therapy, insomnia and tachycardia may occur more frequently. However, any of the other side effects may occur, but it is not necessary they have to appear.
