I have to say I feel relieved and yet SO disappointed to learn that so MANY people have the EXACT pain that I have been describing to my pain management doctor. I had ACDF in January 2014 and although the surgery helped the initial problem/pain, now I have the same pain everyone is describing here - shoulder blades, between shoulder blades, shoulders, it's like never ending. I'm still on hydrocodone (since the surgery), tramadol, and now Celebrex. Next they are saying they might put me on a med that is for similar symptoms to Fibromyalgia...I'm so desperate for relief, but I guess there is none in sight. I'm SO tired of being pain in every day-thank God I'm on anti-depressants as well. (Along with blood pressure and cholesterol meds now.) I do treat it with heat pads at the end of the day, but my daily chores, work, social life, is hard to handle. Life is just not the same anymore. I wish you luck and hopefully relief soon!

I am 46, just had acdf, @ C5-6,6-7. This shoulder pain that you speak of has been THE WORST!! Meds don't touch it. All the nurses in that department with my overnight stay told me most patients complain about that area. My P.A. told me they have to use a retractor to hold the vertebrae apart.... So your fascia and muscles get stretched. My husband would roll a massage ball about the size of child's kick ball lightly over my back during these AWFUL spasms. I would cry and hardly be able to use my arms. It felt like my back falling off.

Kam, I feel your pain. I had my c6 c7 done February of this year. I have had nothing but tightness, pain and spasms in my shoulders, neck and shoulder blades. It is horrible and I don't know what to do about it. Some days are better than others but most days are horrible. I don't sleep at night. I am up all night trying to figure out how to get comfortable. I have tried numerous pillows, muscle relaxers and other meds and nothing seems to help. The PT didn't even stop the pain. I have noticed that since my surgery I have aged a lot due to lack of sleep and hurting everyday. I used to have motivation and liked to get out of the house but by the time I get home from work I am wiped out, not to mention my overall appearance. Hang in there!

Hey, I'm a 41 year old female and I had 2 posterior cervical laminectomy on c5 c6 c7 then a month later on t1 and t2 and I've been in pain across my shoulders and neck ever since. It's so bad sometimes until I have very bad headaches. The muscle spasms are unbelievable. It's been 1year and 6months since the surgeries. I thought I would be back at work by now but, the doctor said I have post laminnectomy syndrome aka fail back surgery and he don't advice going back in because it only makes it worst. I almost crazy now form the pain and numbness. What else can I do?

I am 3 weeks post op and I too is having the exact same pain. I am still taking muscle relaxer and if the pain is too much I take narco med prescribed by my doctor. I am walking at least 1.25 miles daily and moving around the house. The problem is I cannot stay up longer than 30 mins because if I do the spasm just comes back. The spasm is on the opposite shoulder from the initial problem. my lower neck, shoulder blade and upper back are swollen and im worried.

I just had (well, a month ago) c7-t1 fusion surgery, and my arm feels AWESOME. I was hoping this would be the end of my pain and meds forever. I have a awesome surgeon as well, and I'm most happy with the surgery. However, now I've got god awful pain in my back at shoulder blade level. Not in the center of my back, but right below the shoulder blades, both sides. I'm ....... just sick of this. I want to be better so bad, I just can't tell you. Is this pain you describe the same as what I've described ??? It sounds like you had/have the pain in the center of your back. between your shoulder blades, where mine is below each shoulder blade. I've also got terrible pain in the lower back, but I'm sure that's just me not being active.

I'm seeing the physio-therapist, to strengthen my arm/hand. But he's not sure why this other pain is happening.

Anybody else have this particular issue, and if so, what was the cause, but more importantly, solution.

thanks all, and I feel for you all. Most people don't understand how debilitating this stuff is.

I agree I believe surgeons are trained to say they've never heard of that before so they don't have to deal with the problem.
good luck

I have the same pain. Surgery 2 months ago. It feels like a burning sensation that constantly hurts. Rest makes it feel better, with heat. Pain killers do not help at all. The neck pain is gone with the numbness, but this is different then what I had before. NEED HELP. NEED RELIEF ASAP!!!!
