I'm 23 and I've had a bartholin cyst in my left labia for the past 6-7 months. It would swell up after sex and be painful but was constantly there no matter what. I got a shot of antibiotics about 3 months ago but it did nothing bc it wasn't abscessed. So after getting fed up with dealing with all the pain and inconvenience of this cyst I made an appointment and yesterday I had it lanced open, drained and a word catheter inserted. I've read people's concerns about not seeing where they were cut open- the incision is made as close to the vaginal opening as possible. I got to watch the procedure thanks to a med student holding a mirror for me. The Dr. told me that she wants the catheter in for at least a week but ideally 4-6 weeks. After my morning pee, I wanted to cry. I'm not sure if the pain is from the stress of everything (wound mostly) being spread when sitting on the toilet but I'm in pain for a while after using the bathroom each time. I have a squirt bottle courtesy of the Dr. to rinse and pat dry when I use the bathroom, it was definitely helpful relieving some of the intense burning from my morning pee. Did I mention I'm on my period so this makes it that much more awesome. I'm not wanting to use a tampon bc of the pain even though my Dr. said it would be fine. I got one night of work off but I have to go in tonight. I'm still pretty tender but it's only been one day, I hope this all goes well and my cyst doesn't reoccur.

Hi, just read your post and sorry to hear your in pain but like any operation it will be painful for a bit until it starts to heal up a bit, with an abscess the longer they can stay open and drain then the more chance there is that they will heal up.
Didn't they give you any pain killers to take or anything to help ease the pain?

They didn't, maybe I should call her tomorrow and see if that could happen bc work tonight is going to be pretty unpleasant. I knew I should expect some pain considering I was sliced open and a little balloon was shoved into the bartholin duct :( but damn I just hope the cyst doesn't happen again after this.

I could be a wise idea to call and see what they say about pain relief.
I have done a bit of reading up on the different operations and they say its 85% effective but if it does come back the an operation can be performed to remove the gland completely.
If you would like more information just Google bartholin cyst surgery.
Hope this helps :-)
