Hi, there. My brother has been diagnosed with polymyositis. I know this is an autoimmune disease of muscles, i.e. muscle fibbers. I would like to know if this disease has remission. Does one can really feel better in some periods? How long do they last? What does provoke new attacks? Thank you in advance.

I was diagnosed with Polymyositis 2 years ago. I was started on high doses of corticosteroids for 8 months. I was given Immuran for a while but that had very bad side effects on me. I have been off the steroids for almost a year now and feel perfectly normal. There are subtle reminders at times such as Reynauds Syndrome (fingers turn white and numb) or tired muscles....at those time I just rest and stop whatever activity I am doing then I am fine.

I was diagnosed with Polymyositis 9 years ago. First was on high does of prednisone. But have not been on it for 2 years now. I am taking several medications but I'm doing so well was thinking of getting off the drugs. Im a little afraid of a relapse if I do but they are very expensive and can cause other problems too . Any opinions?
