I have been on depo for the past 4 maybe 5 years and just stopped getting the injections about a month ago. I have had sore breasts/ nipples since the time my last shot was due...i also feel like they're swollen. I have gotten my period and even took 2 pregnancy tests just to make sure but they came back negative. It's actually beginning to be quite miserable now, it hurts to wear a bra and hurts even more not to wear one, my boyfriend can't even touch them with out me yelling in pain most of the time. I haven't seen a doctor because I just moved so my primary doctor is still in my old state, I'm not sure whether I should wait it out or go find a doctor immediately since it's so uncomfortable!

Hi Ladies,

I think I'm the only guy to post in this forum. My girlfriend has had some side effects too including 2 1/2 months of bleeding, weight gain, sore nipples and swollen breasts. We had too many close calls using condoms so I booked a vasectomy. Since it takes 2 or more months before the vasectomy is effective, the doctor advised she do one round of Depo. The dock said there may be spotting and menstrual irregularity.. and that's it. Well, she started spotting right away and those are the good days.. alternating with heavy bleeding similar to a heavy period.. and back to spotting, constantly .. so it hasn't exactly been great for sex - or our linen. The next Depo shot would be due in two weeks and after 4 days of heavy bleeding she has now completely stopped bleeding for over a week. But now she's got swollen painful nipples and as of yesterday, she says her breasts are swollen or growing or something…

Thanks for all your posts as this reassures both of us that this is 'normal' for post Depo… but I hope she returns to pre Depo normal soon. I feel bad that she went through this and we were not given enough info about side-effects… It's crazy what we all do to have safe sexual intimacy. She would still have done the Depo and I am happy I did the vasectomy, even though my junk still hurts after 2 months.

What I'd really like to know is if there are ways to alleviate her symptoms without injecting or taking more hormones. Cold cabbage water sounds… well, any other suggestions than that?

JJ

I've been on the depo shot for about three years now, decided to stop because of the weight gain and insane mood swings. It's been about a month since I was supposed to get my next injection and I've had REALLY bad bloating (think laying on your bed to get your jeans closed bloating), and my nipples are incredibly sore to the touch. Reading these replies and seeing that I'm not the only one experiencing these awful side effects is incredibly reassuring (though I'm sorry that you all are going through it too :( ).

I was on the Depo shot for at least 5 years.  I was due for another shot in April 2013, but did not get it - instead I started taking LoEstrin 24.  I was taking that up until about a month ago.  It's been 8 months now - November - with no periods.  I stopped taking the pill, though, because my husband and I would like to start a family, and frankly - I cannot remember to take my pills :P

About a week ago I got home from work, took my bra off and found my nipples were sore, and it hasn't changed in a week.  Like most of you I thought I might be pregnant, but tests are negative - or it's too soon.  I would've thought the side effects of coming off of Depo would have happened to me when I stopped getting the shot and started the pills, but maybe not?  So, I figure I'm either preggo or going to start ovulating again soon and having periods.

I do agree that the many years being period free were well worth it.  Oh, and *knock on wood* I've not had the bloating, nausea, just the sore nipples.  Although, my husband was rubbing on them the other day and it really turned me on and led to sex! So, yay! Hahaha!

Hoping the periods aren't nightmares when they start up again.  I've read many a horror story about them lasting forever and miscarriages too.

Hello, I know this was a while ago but did everything finally work out? Meaning did all those symptoms from coming off depo go away...did your periods finally become regular. I ask because I've been on depo since I was 15 and my last shot was march 2015 and I am 22. I've tried to get off ot before that but when I did my breasts were so sore I had to hold them whenever I did something. So I went and got another shot and the soreness went away. My last shot was due in June but my fiance and I were ready to be done with that because of the loss of bone density( I am not strong at all) and just wanted to make sure I was healthier. I've never had any problems with depo until I tried to get off it the first time..but now about 4 months later just my nipples are very very sore...they have a sharp sting and I feel like pinching the area where I feel the sting would help, but it doesn't. I was hoping maybe you could give a little advice as too what I can do to make the pain go away or relieve it somewhat. I smoke cigarettes, I do drink quite a bit of caffine(I have definitely cut back but am willing to cut back more or even all if it would make a difference), and I've gained about 20lbs in the past 7 years but since being off it I've gained like 10 it feels like, and I've been off it for 4 months, what the heck!!!!
