I was due my second shot Feb 28th and said NO WAY IN HELL. I got the shot 4 months after having my first baby at age 36, and it was nothing but bleeding, bleeding, bleeding. It seemed to cancel out my anti depressants and anti anxiety drugs (I have such a long history with those problems I am on disability, all three of my doctors knew this, and still allowed (encouraged) me to have this injection. I have a great husband, beautiful baby, nice home, more than I have ever had, and once the depo was in my system, I just got so depressed I wanted to die. I'd never felt that horrible, ever. I made my husband's life a living hell while unmedicated for the pregnancy only to turn around, get the depo, and put him through it again in spite of being medicated. The shrink was of no help, he said "it could have gone the other way and helped your problems." He is now my former shrink. I started feeling better once I quit the meds he had me on (which had worked fine prior to the depo). Now the depo is leaving my system and in some ways, I feel much better and in some ways, I am more of a mess than ever before. My anxiety level is constantly through the roof, my panic attacks aren't even touched by the xanax anymore, I've gotten fat in the belly and my back is killing me and some mornings I can't even stay awake to feed my baby. I've taken four pregnancy tests, all negative. The doctors won't listen to me, they think I am being histrionic. I can't even get past the barracudas at the general doc's desk to talk to him because they are so dismissive. I'm going to due a siege when my baby goes in for her 9 month check up and demand a blood pregnancy test. I almost went crazy on this stuff, and being dismissed just added to it. It's toxic. >;) No more hormonal birth control for me, ever again. Even if the idiotic doctors here haven't caught on (I was put back on my meds during month 8 of pregnancy because the hormones had me psych-ward-ready) my body apparently can't handle an influx of extra hormones without going insane and I have caught on.
The only other person I know that had taken depo still laments that they took her off of it after 12 years, she loved it to death, so it's been hard to find support during all this. Hubby tries but I think even he is tired of my "depo is the devil" tirades. I was not warned of anything but weight gain and loss of periods, though, that's what makes me so mad.

Hi everyone. Just thought I'd share my story. I got on Depo when I was 18 because pills were not effective (the women in my family are unbelievably fertile). I had absolutely no symptoms (I had no periods or spotting though)for 3 1/2 years on it. Suddenly 2 weeks ago I started having a brown discharge (almost like the end of a period), it was pretty heavy and I had horrible cramping. I was also experiencing nausea, back pain, dizziness, and depression (wasn't sure if it was related to stress: I'm taking care of my dying grandfather and also constantly dealing with my brother who has bipolar disorder (frequent suicide attempts-I take him to dr appts., go to his house at a seconds notice when he's upset, I'm really the only person he has etc.), and I ALSO just moved into a new rental (then lost one of my jobs within a week of moving in) and am struggling to pay the bills. So I'm really not sure if the depression is from the depo. The symptoms lasted 12 days before I called the dr. I was due for my shot in 1 1/2 weeks. They said I should come in and get the shot early and it would get rid of the symptoms. I asked them before getting the shot if these symptoms would recur and they said they were unsure but that they really thought the best thing to do is get the shot and that I was just having a period. I got the shot. When I was leaving they said if the discharge continued I should call them right away. The discharge got worse the next day (today) and my other symptoms are worse. I called and the nurse said that there is nothing they can do, that it's just a period. I kept telling her that I felt horrible and something was wrong. She kept telling me that it was just a period and it should go away soon. I started crying and then got really angry and started yelling at her (I very rarely lose control of my emotions like that). I am fed up. And now reading about all the stories on here I am concerned that even if I don't get my next shot I could be looking at months to years of these horrible symptoms. The reason for my story is this: Just because you don't have symptoms for a while on depo does not mean that they won't happen at some point. I thought I was in the clear after 3 1/2 years but no. I suggest any woman to get off depo even if they don't have symptoms now, because they can come on rapidly with no warning and they are HORRIBLE.
Good luck to everyone and I hope everyone gets their periods and fertility back 100%!

Hi everyone. I was on Depo when I was 24. The only side effect I had from getting the shot was a very bad migraine the day I recieved the first injection. I also was very moody that year. I also did not have a period at all! After my husband and I decided to have another child, I went off of depo in September of 2004. (that was my last injection). Shortly after going off depo, I started feeling nauseous everyday and had intense pain in my legs. I have read through a lot of the posts here....not all....but was wondering if anyone else experienced the leg pain? It was horrible. Anyways..... my period did not come back until December of 2005. I remeber walking around in a store and feeling wetness down there and thought no way! I had seriously thought my period was never going to come back. We tried to have a baby for 6 months. Nothin. Then in August of 2006 I got pregnant. Had my 3rd child in May of 2007. To this day, I still feel nausea everyday and my stomach always gurgles.
I remember my husband telling me when I was on the shot, that I just wasn't the same person. He told me that the shot had messed me up. I didn't believe him at first but looking back, I believe it now.
Depo was a good idea for my lifestyle at the time. I could never remember to take pills. I would recommend any woman that wants to try depo, to RESEARCH!!! The only side effects my DR told me about were weight gain and bone density loss, which I didn't experience the weight loss at all.

Hi to the lady that asked if anyone took the shot only once. I did! And I was lazy to go get my next shot and I am SO glad i missed it. I never understood why i cried as often as i did. Sometimes i just cried for the hell of it, something was making me sad and I couldn't pin point to what was doing this! After reading allllll of these post, everything made sense. The migraine, the dizziness, sudden cravings of every food possible, back aches, hot flashes, VERY VERY VERY VERY BAD CRAMPS and blood clot the size of grapes. FREAKED THE c**p out of me ! THE worse cramps I have ever experienced in my WHOLE life after getting off the shot. It was so bad to the point no Tylenol can help (midol did it went away after 3 hours of constant pain and tears) I've been off it for a full month... I hope I do not have to experience this up to another 5 months.. since ive only had the shot once :[

I have also been experiencing insomnia and anxiety the past few weeks. I do get tired a lot and require at least 10 hours of sleep, all I want to do is lay in bed.. zero sex drive while on it, it's slowlyyyyyyyy returning. I will forever look into EVERYTHING that I put into my body from this day on.

Hello everyone I also wanted to share my story. I was on the shot for 8 years. My last shot was due Feb 2010 which i did not get so technically the shot has been out of my system for 3 months. While I was on the shot i had one major bleeding day and i think it was towards the begining of me starting the shot. Otherwise i had no periods or sex drive for the full 8 years. I gained about 30 lbs over the 8 years which i considered due to getting older and being less active and not watching what i eat. Now that the depo is withdrawing i too get sore larger breasts 1 1/2 weeks out of the month, slight neausea, headaches often, moodiness, and more emotional. None of it is to severe yet and if i didnt read these posts im not sure i would notice it all that much, my largest concearn is that its only going to get worse as it withdraws more. I wish more people would post how long there symptoms lasted and when they got their period or was able to concieve. I will be sure to comment when i recieve either or and will inform you if new symptoms arrive or get worse. as of now 3 months clean the symptoms suck but are tolerable i really hope they dont worsen or last to long. for those of you that are still suffering or unfortunately looking forward to these symptoms i apologize and hope the best for all of us.

omg i i'm glad i'm not going mad well where do i start i have been on depo for just over 7 years after my last child december 2002(sorry for any one that wants children but i'm glad as i don't want anymore i have 3 wonderfull children )never really gained any weight allway stayed between 11 and 12 stone in may 2008 i become unwell with stomach pains , feeling faint well just pains everywhere and no energe went to the doctors a few times and she said there was nothing wrong with me one time she sent me for some test on my hand as i kept loseing feeling in them but they all come back fine. it got august 2008 and i was down to 10 stone the more i seemed to eat the more i lost ,said to the nurse on my next jab about it and she did a few blood test and they decied that i had pernicious anaemia said i would have to have vitamin b12 jab lots off them so i have 4 or 5 and she said i would start to feel better, but i was at my mother in laws a few days later and she said i look very ill she asked if i had eatten and i said not as i wasn't hunger but she made me some toast got half down me and i just couldn't eat anymore as it just made me feel sick she told me go to the doctors on the way home, i got to the doctors and they had a appointment with the nurse now so i went in told her i was feeling unwell very light headed she took my blood pressure and said it was very low and took lots off blood and they tested it for more thing then they did the first time .she told me to go home and rest . got call in to the doctors 3 days later for them to tell me i have Coeliac disease and sent me for a Endoscopy test came back and yes i had Coeliac disease so i had to start my gluten-free diet that was in november 2008 . well by this time i weight 9 stone . started my gluten-free diet very hard to start with as you can't eat bread, cakes ,pasties and yorkshire pudding down to the little thing such as viniger and soya sauce but as time went on i was feeling better and started to put abit off weight back on . i went and had a bone scan and found i had lack off bone in my spine so i started take Calcium with vitamin D in , in january 2009 my sister in law was trying to fine a new Contraception so i said why not try depo its worked for me , don't even have peroids in all the 7 years never had one(it was heaven lol)anyway my sister in law has to look it up to see what side affects there are and as weight gain was one she said i'm not going on that and as she was reading though she came across bone deffeiciency , i said omg i allready have that ,so when i was dew for my next jab i asked the nurse about it and she said oh yea maybe i should think about coming off it so i told my hubbie and said he would go have the snip . in the mean time i was still having depo ,he had his snip in august 2009 and i had my last depo in september 2009 so it would have run out at the end off december . in novermber 2009 went back to see my dietitian i had gain 1 1/2 stone in a year thats was good now weighing 101/2 stone looked and felt really good untill january 2010 omg i got all my pains back my stomach was swollen and my boobs where big and hard and i gain another stone and a half in 2 weeks and hot sweats /body obora i thought i was going mad i too went and got a pregnace test lol seems so silly now at the begining off febuary 2010 i went to the doctors and told her everything i said to her the only thing i have changed was i stopped have my depo she said no that would only make me lose weight not gain and she did a full blood test 8 bottles lol,a week later i went back she said all my test come back normal and i should do what everyone else dose and i said whats that and she said go on a diet , i was in shock oh she did say i was obese but not enough to give me sliming pills , than added on the end that my liver was high lighted red but that would be fine most probblie a infection i had and told me go see her in about 6 weeks to see how i was getting with my diet , i did go back to see her but not about my diet i had got the flu and was really unwell and i didn't mention it and nor did she . well the next thing its may and i started bleeding oh well not a good thing but its i thought at least everything is going back to normal and my stomach don't seem to bad still get a few pain now and again but they have been worse . thennnn omg i have gone from having no sex drive to sex drive over load my hubbie has had enough lol i can't stop thinging about sex don't get me wrong we do have sex 2 or 3 time a week but i feel like i could do it 20 times a day .twice on saturday ,twice on sunday i would have still been up for but hubbie wasn't ,he put his foot down on monday and said he was to tired and tonight well i still wanted more just him kissing me make me feel turned on ,he now thinks there is something wrong with me lol just writing it on here makes me feel turned on omg i know its not a bad thing but all i can think about is having sex its not good .so this is where i have found myself looking on the internet to see what could be wrong with me and after coming acorss these page i just can't belive thats its not just me. well i did read them all and i didn't see that anyone had a Overactive Sex Drive so if you have let me know so i don't feel alone . i never belived in hormones but now well i still say its just 7 years all rushing back into my body at once but after reading some off these stories i don't know .oh yes and i forgot to say i'm only 33 years old , thank you all for reading my post i will look foward to Wow I'm so glad I came across this forum.
I started the shot 6 weeks after giving birth in March 09. I went with my moms word & got on the shot right away & my doctor didn't warn me about anything at all. While on it I just researched basic symptoms & came to the conclusion that every type of birth control has its symptoms.

Now its July 2010 & I'm due for a shot, I didn't go because I wanted to change offices & its been a couple of weeks since I missed my shot that I'm feeling crazy! Lately on the shot I felt very very tired, gassy ( like a tummy rumbling, baby kicking thing), diarehha, very bad lower back pain, uncontrolable headaches, and of course weight gain. & I always had an excuse for why I was feeling this way.
Now that I'm off of the shot, Im feeling less moody but my stomach & back are acting up. I haven't had any bleeding for the last 2 years because I was pregnant & then went straight to the shot. So hopefully I start getting regular.

I seriously feel like I am pregnant but no way! Haven't had intercourse in a very long time due to this shot that lowers my sex drive.
Good luck to all you Ladies! We aren't alone. & I DO NOT recommend this shot to anyone!

I got my first (and only) depo provera shot last May and was due to get another a couple of weeks ago. I never made the appointment after discussing it with my boyfriend and we are considering going with another method that won't mess with me as much. I spotted the entire month of July and for about two weeks in June, with a heavy period lasting a week and a half. I never knew on a day to day basis if I needed pantyliners, pads, or tampons. I was also having bad headaches and was tired all the time. Well, I was beginning to get worried because last weekend, I woke up with incredibly sore nipples and I have never felt that before, not anything like before I get my period. My boyfriend keeps jokingly rubbing my belly and asking if the baby is hungry when I am. I am also having a bit of back pain, an uneasy stomach, and I'm not sleeping very well with crazy, crazy dreams. I was beginning to freak out a bit, we want children eventually, just not as of yet. I am so glad that I found this forum now, I am relieved that I'm not the only one.

I was on Depo provera for 10 years and recently went off this May. It's been almost 3 months. I have been quite headachy and crampy on and off for the past 2 months. I can tell that my body is trying to wake up down there because both of my ovaries are achy. Sometimes they hard quite badly. I am planning to go in for a physical to discuss the aches and pains with my dr. i assume that everyone is different and I just don't know which of my symptoms to attach to the ending of depo and which are other things. I'm trying not to worry because that only makes things worse. I feel if I would get my period it would help release some of the tensions down there. Right now my body is trying really hard to do it's thing and I'm sure I'll feel better as soon as it does.

I have been on depo provera for about 15 years and have tried a few times to go off it, now this is the first month that i am not having it and boy am i suffereing, firstly my doctor says you shouldnt stay on it for so long, i am 49 years old and my poor body is crying not knowing what to do after so long on depo, the reason i was on it so long is that i didnt have my periods (which was great) and the few times i tried to go off it i had very very bad withdrawal symptons so i thought it easier to go back on it.
Now i have to ride the waves, these are my symptoms, my boobs feel like they are going to drop off, my nipples are going to explode and that is all day everyday, i am very emotional and sometimes moody (not like me at all) so as my doctor said to me my body is going to be screaming out because it doesnt know whats going on and i have to ride it, not easy.
All i have to say is that dont stay on it for very long because i think the longer you stay on it you get addicted and the worse the side effects are when you come off.
Having said that i am having a blood test and vaginal test to see if i am menopausal, if anyone wants to ask me anymore questions about depo i think i am an expert feel free to ask, good luck to everyone and i just have to deal with the torture for a while.
Oh by the way my partner has had a vasectomy so i didnt need to even go on depo but because i didnt get my periods WHY NOT :-P

I got off of the shot after being on it for two yrs. My last shot was due Jan 05, 2010. I had no period the entire time I was on the shot and received my first period in May 2010. It looked like it was going to be regular but when I was on my third cycle in July 2010, I bled for an entire month straight. I am now hoping that I will get on a regular cycle from here on out. I did read that it can take 6 to 8 months to get regular and 6 to 12 to get pregnant. I got off of the shot because my husband and I are trying to get pregnant. I will keep you posted.
